Essentially, repayments reduce as the resale value of the vehicle decreases.
Dolphin Surf insurance: Here, Absa is offering comprehensive motor insurance (base cover) on the Dolphin Surf with a maximum premium of R999 per month
Insurance discount: Aside from the Dolphin Surf, it has incorporated a 20% discount on comprehensive motor insurance premiums on its digital quotation platform.

These offers are not yet being shared broadly. Rather, they are being made available through BYD’s dealer network, which will be up to 56 branches by the end of July.

The BYD Finance offering is not dissimilar to other partnerships such as VW Financial Services (a joint venture between VW and WesBank).

Absa and BYD have been working together since 2022, which predates the brand’s entry into the South African market in 2023.

Fulufhelo Mandane, executive for strategic partnerships, vehicle and asset finance at Absa Relationship Banking, explains how the partners created some of these offers.

He says they needed to look at finance options and insurance holistically as, historically, insurance cover for EVs has been high. This is mainly due to concerns about the longevity of batteries in these vehicles.

“There was a lot of feedback that came from dealers where customers would walk into the dealership and want [a specific] car. The instalment makes sense and then the insurance comes in and it’s too expensive. Then they pull back and they don’t want to buy the vehicle anymore because of insurance.”

Underwriting risk

Absa relied on data from BYD, including insights from more mature markets, to better understand the underwriting risk.

To extend GFV, which is popular across many of the traditional manufacturers, into the EV segment at scale also relied on this data and BYD’s experience.

Read: Electric vehicles could soon be cheaper than petrol cars in Africa

ADVERTISEMENT:

“With guaranteed future value, all you need to do is to buy the vehicle and then you can bring it back or you can trade it in for something else or you can keep it after three or four years, and you don’t have to worry about its value,” says Mandane.

He believes the most exciting offer is Flex Down Finance, which is “something unique”.

“Customers understand that the vehicle value goes down [over time],” he explains, adding that this finance product “follows that curve and makes sure that as the depreciation curve goes down, the instalment also follows the same curve”.

It still offers ‘standard’ finance options, but with BYD Finance, “you’ve got options”.

Making EVs more accessible

Nomonde Kweyi, marketing director at BYD Auto South Africa, says that “with Absa having the scale, and with Absa having the consumer profile that it has, it commercialises [vehicle finance] in a way that the new energy vehicle sector has never seen”.

“We provide accessibility to a consumer.
