Volvo Car AB Chief Executive Officer H\u00e5kan Samuelsson pushed back against White House senior trade adviser Peter Navarro\u2019s criticism of Chinese automakers, saying they have prospered because of an effective strategy rather than unfair competition.<\/p>\n
Asked about Navarro\u2019s assertions that China\u2019s BYD was \u201cplundering global car markets,\u201d Samuelsson said the description \u201cgoes a bit too far.\u201d BYD and Volvo Car\u2019s majority owner Zhejiang Geely Holding Group have emerged as two of China\u2019s strongest performers and were likely to remain so over the longer-term even as the country\u2019s crowded market consolidates.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re living in a new competitive landscape, and we have to respect those who have been successful in electric vehicles,\u201d Samuelsson said in an interview after Volvo Car\u00a0second-quarter earnings\u00a0on Friday.<\/p>\n
Chinese manufacturers \u201chave done a lot of things right,\u201d he added, pointing to their deep vertical integration in batteries, software and the broader automotive value chain.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou simply have to put them on the list of the new industry leaders, alongside the companies that have traditionally been there,\u201d Samuelsson said, citing Volkswagen AG\u2019s Audi brand, BMW AG and Mercedes-Benz Group AG.<\/p>\n
Samuelsson was responding to a commentary Navarro published Thursday in\u00a0Politico\u00a0in which he accused Europe of \u201cdithering\u201d while Chinese manufacturers rapidly gain market share. He singled out BYD as \u201ca microcosm of China\u2019s pirate business model: copy, absorb, subsidize, scale, dump and dominate.\u201d<\/p>\n
Chinese carmakers are steadily expanding their presence in Europe despite higher European Union tariffs on their electric vehicles and BYD is currently rolling out its premium brand Denza across the region.<\/p>\n
Volvo Car recently\u00a0secured US approval\u00a0to continue selling connected vehicles despite its Chinese ownership, removing a major uncertainty for the Gothenburg, Sweden-based manufacturer.<\/p>\n
