The UK government is investing billions in Scotland\u2019s defence sector<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Defence has handed Scotland a further \u00a350 million boost on condition that the Scottish Government backs the deal.<\/p>\n
It includes two new Defence Technical Excellence Colleges (DTECs) costing \u00a310m that will be set up \u202fin the east and west if match funding is provided by Holyrood.<\/p>\n
Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, Luke Pollard,\u202fand Scotland Secretary Douglas Alexander\u202ftoday\u202flaunched\u202fthe Scotland Defence Growth Deal at the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland.<\/p>\n
Mr Alexander said: \u201cIf the Scottish Government provide match funding for these two\u00a0DTECs\u00a0we will work in consultation with Colleges Scotland to understand which colleges can achieve DTEC status and how we implement this.\u201d<\/p>\n
The deal will also include\u202f\u00a0\u00a35m in support of the Arrol Gibb Innovation Campus, Rosyth and a similar sum to support the Clyde Engineering and Innovation Centre, near HMNB Clyde.<\/p>\n
Mr Pollard said: \u201cWe pledged a Defence Growth Deal for Scotland and today we are delivering on that commitment. Scotland is not just part of the UK\u2019s defence story\u202f-\u202fit is\u202fvital\u202fto it. <\/p>\n
\u201cFrom the Clyde to Rosyth, from Edinburgh to the Highlands, Scottish industry, Scottish\u202fworkers\u202fand Scottish ingenuity are keeping Britain secure.\u202f\u201d<\/p>\n
Gavin Donoghue, CEO of Colleges Scotland, welcomed the announcement. He said:\u202f\u202f\u00a0\u201cToday\u2019s announcement of a Defence Technical Excellence College (DTEC) model in Scotland, puts colleges at the heart of defence skills.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThe East and West DTECs will ensure there is a clear focus on strengthening regional capability and creating skilled employment to support the defence sector, in colleges up and down the country.\u202f\u201d<\/p>\n
The MOD\u202fspent\u202fmore than \u00a32 billion\u202fin Scotland in 2024\/25, directly supporting\u202f11,800 industry jobs\u202fand placing 254 contracts with Scottish businesses.<\/p>\n
Industry analysis suggests there could be demand fo4 50,000\u202fadditional\u202fdefence jobs across the UK by 2034\/35.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n
