At the start of July, a small Cessna 402 plane operated by Bahamian tourist airline Flamingo Air encountered an unexpected problem mid-flight before crashing into the bushes near San Andros Airport (MYAN).<\/p>\n
The fatal accident caused the deaths of all nine passengers and the pilot aboard while the airline remains grounded with a suspended air operator’s license (AOC) pending an investigation by Bahamian authorities and the Civil Aviation Authority. <\/p>\n
The airline has not been running flights and laid off 35 crew and administrative employees as an investigation into the cause of the accident takes place.<\/p>\n

In a different part of the world, a similar accident with a tourist plane carrying 13 people took place when a Cessna Caravan C-208 crashed four \u200bmiles from the Peruvian city of Nazca on Aug. 1.<\/p>\n
The accident claimed the lives of all 11 passengers and two pilots aboard and occurred just seven miles from the Nazca Lines archeological site that tourists from different parts of the world were traveling to see. Since the ancient designs that were etched into a giant stretch of desert floor of southern Peru more than 2,000 years ago are only visible by air, the short air tours are a popular activity for both tourists and archeologists. <\/p>\n

According to the latest reports on the accident, Peru’s General Directorate for Civil Aviation (DGAC) has suspended Aerodiana’s operating license pending an investigation into the Aug. 1 crash.<\/p>\n
Without an active AOC, Aerodiana is unable to run or sell commercial flights to passengers. Launched out of Peru’s Miraflores in 2008, Aerodiana is specifically a tourist airline selling overflight tours of the ancient Nazca Lines on a single-engine turboprop Cessna 208B Grand Caravan aircraft.<\/p>\n
In an incident in 2010, the same Grand Caravan plane taking tourists on a 45-minute tour of the ancient geoglyphs was hijacked by members of a drug cartel who boarded as passengers using fake identity documents. The pilot and co-pilot were eventually released after being held hostage while the plane was declared missing and never located again.<\/p>\n
The Nazca Lines are a collection of ancient geoglyphs that are only visible by air.<\/p>\n

In a statement put out immediately after the accident, Aerodiana expressed “deepest regret over the tragic accident.”<\/p>\n
“We inform the public that the company will evaluate its flight schedule in accordance with directives issued by the relevant authorities,” Aerodiana said further.<\/p>\n
