Just four months after being appointed acting Group CEO of state-owned airline South African Airways (SAA), Matshela Seshibe has been placed on \u201cspecial leave\u201d.<\/p>\n
The SAA board confirmed the move in a brief statement late on Friday afternoon, without giving reasons for the action. Seshibe \u2013 who headed SAA\u2019s AirChefs division previously \u2013 became acting CEO after the sudden resignation of former CEO Prof John Lamola in April, together with three board members.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe board of SAA has resolved to place the acting Group CEO, Mr Matshela Seshibe, on special leave, with immediate effect, pending the outcome of an internal process,\u201d it said in the statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe decision reflects the board\u2019s unwavering commitment to the highest standards of good governance, accountability, integrity and leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is also consistent with the board\u2019s responsibility to safeguard the interests of SAA, its employees, customers, partners and other stakeholders while ensuring that the organisation continues to operate with stability and confidence,\u201d the airline added.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe recognise the responsibility entrusted to us and will continue to act decisively and in the best interests of the airline and all of its stakeholders\u201d commented SAA board chair, Sedzani Mudau.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo ensure leadership continuity and operational stability, the board has appointed the Chief Legal Officer, Ms Koekie Mbeki as acting group CEO with immediate effect,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n

The board noted that \u201cMbeki brings extensive institutional knowledge and experience of SAA, having served the organisation for the past ten years\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe board is confident that, in her acting capacity, she will provide the leadership, continuity and stability required as SAA continues to execute its strategy and deliver on its mandate,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n
