A growing family changes protection needs. A health event affects household cash flow. An inheritance changes investment decisions. No financial decision exists in isolation, and neither should the advice that supports it.

The value of financial advice is evolving

A key theme at the conference was that the financial advice profession is changing. Financial products are easier to access, and technology is changing financial services. Still, clients want more than what technology can offer. They are looking for context, judgement, and confidence.

Technology will continue to make products easier to access and information easier to find. But access does not automatically create clarity.

Clients need someone who understands the full picture of their lives and can help them connect the decisions they are making today with the life they want to build tomorrow.

Read: Balancing AI efficiency with human expertise in asset management

Advice needs to include the whole household

The conference encouraged advisors to think more broadly about who their clients are. Too often, financial planning conversations focus on the person leading the household’s finances. Yet when life changes unexpectedly, it is often the spouse or partner who is left making critical financial decisions.

One memorable idea from the conference was the concept of the “9 o’clock client”. This refers to the spouse or family member who calls an advisor after a major life event with a single question: “Are we going to be okay?” This moment is the real test of financial advice.

The Momentum Group/BMR Financial Advice Research Report supports this idea. It found that consumers want advisors to understand their full situation before giving advice. This shows why financial planning should look at the whole household, not just one person.

Advisors cannot afford to speak only to the person who traditionally takes the lead in the financial conversation.

The person sitting quietly in the room today may be the one making the most important financial decisions tomorrow. Good advice prepares the entire household, not just the policyholder.

This is particularly relevant for women and widows. When an advisor relationship is built primarily around one spouse, the surviving spouse may not have experienced the advisor as their own, making it more important to build trust, understanding and a relationship with both partners from the outset.

Financial matters are getting more complex, which makes sound financial advice more important than ever.

The conference also looked at the broader forces affecting financial planning, including shifting client expectations, competing financial priorities, regulatory developments, and emerging technology.

Read: Your wealth is impressive – your structure should not be confusing

ADVERTISEMENT:

Speakers agreed that while these changes are transforming the profession, they also make professional financial advice even more valuable.

Today, people have more financial choices, more information, and more complexity than ever. Yet many households are still financially vulnerable.

According to data from the South African Reserve Bank, South Africa’s household savings rate stood at -1.30% of disposable income in the first quarter of 2026, highlighting the pressure many households continue to face.

In this environment, advisors play a bigger role in helping clients get their financial priorities in order, make informed choices, and prepare for the unexpected.

Advice that brings everything together

The conference showed that the future of financial advice is about helping clients understand both their current decisions and how those choices will affect their future.

Clients don’t experience life in products. They experience careers, families, illness, opportunity, retirement and loss. Our responsibility is to help them connect those moments into one financial plan that evolves with them throughout their lives.

In the end, the conference underscored that the real value of financial advice is not measured when a policy is signed, a premium is paid, or an investment is made.

It is measured when life changes suddenly, and a family can confidently answer, ‘Are we going to be okay?’ because they had the right conversations ahead of time.

Aldert Brink is Momentum Financial Planning CEO.

                        #financial #advice #starts #goals #product

Financial advice is entering a new era in which its value will increasingly be measured…

[4
119,121,5990,2042,2742
