U.S. President Donald\u00a0Trump\u2019s appeal\u00a0to China, France, Japan, South Korea, Britain and others to send warships to keep the\u00a0Strait of Hormuz\u00a0\u201copen and safe\u201d brought no commitments on Sunday as\u00a0oil prices soar\u00a0during the\u00a0Iran war.<\/p>\n
U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright told NBC he has been \u201cin dialogue\u201d with some of the countries, and said he expected China \u201cwill be a constructive partner\u201d in reopening the strait through which one-fifth of global oil exports normally pass.<\/p>\n
Iran\u2019s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told CBS that Tehran has been \u201capproached by a number of countries\u201d seeking safe passage for their vessels, \u201cand this is up to our military to decide.\u201d He said a group of vessels from \u201cdifferent countries\u201d had been allowed to pass, without providing details.<\/p>\n
Iran has said the strait is open to all except the United States and its allies.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t see any reason why we should talk with Americans\u201d about finding a way to end the war, Araghchi added, noting that Israel and the U.S. started the fighting with coordinated attacks on Feb. 28 during\u00a0indirect U.S.-Iran talks. The talks focused on Iran\u2019s nuclear program, and Araghchi said Tehran had \u201cno plan to recover\u201d enriched uranium that is under rubble following U.S. and Israeli attacks last year.<\/p>\n
Countries cautious on Trump\u2019s call<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are intensively looking with our allies at what can be done, because it\u2019s so important that we get the strait reopened,\u201d U.K. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband told Sky News, adding that ending the war is the \u201cbest and surest\u201d way to do it.<\/p>\n
South Korea\u2019s Foreign Ministry said it \u201ctakes note\u201d of Trump\u2019s call and that it \u201cwill closely coordinate and carefully review\u201d the situation with the U.S.<\/p>\n
Expectations are high that Trump will ask Japan directly when Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi meets him on Thursday at the White House.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for China\u2019s embassy to the U.S., Liu Pengyu, said \u201call parties have the responsibility to ensure stable and unimpeded energy supply\u201d and that China would \u201cstrengthen communication with relevant parties\u201d for de-escalation.<\/p>\n
France previously said it is working with countries \u2014 President Emmanuel Macron mentioned partners in Europe, India and Asia \u2014 on a possible international mission to escort ships through the strait but has stressed it must be when \u201cthe circumstances permit,\u201d when fighting has subsided.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, emergency oil stocks \u201cwill soon start flowing to global markets,\u201d the International Energy Agency said Sunday, describing the collective action to lower prices \u201cby far the largest ever.\u201d<\/p>\n
It updated last week\u2019s announcement of 400 million barrels to nearly 412 million. Asian member countries plan to release stocks \u201cimmediately,\u201d and reserves from Europe and the Americas will be released \u201cfrom the end of March.\u201d<\/p>\n
More missile and drone attacks are reported<\/p>\n
Gulf Arab states reported\u00a0new missile and drone attacks\u00a0a day after Iran called for the evacuation of three major ports in the United Arab Emirates \u2014 the first time it has threatened a neighboring\u00a0country\u2019s non-U.S. assets. Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the UAE said they were working to intercept projectiles.<\/p>\n
Iran has accused the U.S. of launching Friday\u2019s strikes on\u00a0Kharg Island, home to Iran\u2019s primary oil terminal, from the UAE, without providing evidence.<\/p>\n
U.S. Central Command said it had no response to Iran\u2019s claim, and Anwar Gargash, a diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, rejected it. Gulf countries that host U.S. bases have denied allowing their land or airspace to be used for military operations against Iran.<\/p>\n
Iran has threatened to attack the region\u2019s U.S.-linked \u201coil, economic and energy infrastructures\u201d if the Islamic Republic\u2019s oil infrastructure is hit.<\/p>\n
Iran has fired hundreds of missiles and drones at the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman during\u00a0the war, causing significant damage and rattling economies even as most are intercepted. Tehran says it targets U.S. assets, even as Iranian strikes are reported at civilian sites such as airports and oil fields.<\/p>\n
War\u2019s toll mounts across the region<\/p>\n
Iranian strikes\u00a0have killed at least a dozen\u00a0civilians in Gulf countries, most of them migrant workers.<\/p>\n
In Iran, the International Committee for the Red Cross said more than 1,300 people have been killed. Iran\u2019s Health Ministry said 223 women and 202 children are among the dead, according to Mizan, the judiciary\u2019s official news agency.<\/p>\n
Iran\u2019s government on Sunday showed journalists buildings damaged by strikes in Tehran on Friday. A police station was hit and surrounding buildings were damaged. Some apartments\u2019 outer walls had been stripped away.<\/p>\n
\u201cGod had mercy on all of us,\u201d said Elham Movagghari, a resident.<\/p>\n
In Israel, 12 people have been killed by Iranian missile fire and more have been injured, including three on Sunday. At least 13 U.S. military members have been killed, six\u00a0in a plane crash in Iraq\u00a0last week.<\/p>\n
At least 820 people have been killed in Lebanon, according to its Health Ministry, since Iran-backed Hezbollah started hitting Israel and Israel responded with strikes and sent additional troops into southern Lebanon. In just 10 days, more than 800,000 people \u2014 nearly one out of every seven residents of Lebanon \u2014 have been displaced.<\/p>\n
More Iranian missile strikes hit Israel<\/p>\n

Several strikes hit central Israel and the Tel Aviv area, where they caused damage at 23 sites and sparked a small fire. Magen David Adom, Israel\u2019s rescue service, released video showing a large crater in a street and shrapnel damage to an apartment building.<\/p>\n
Multisite impacts have become a hallmark of the war, as Israel\u2019s military says Iran is firing\u00a0cluster bombs that can evade some air defenses\u00a0and scatter submunitions across multiple locations.<\/p>\n
