Scottish Enterprise saw a lower level of export support last year and was also forced to write off more than \u00a321 million invested in failed early stage companies.<\/p>\n
The development agency said it helped \u201cambitious Scottish businesses\u201d generate \u00a32.15 billion in exports last year, down from \u00a32.46bn in the previous year.<\/p>\n
A press release headlined it as a \u201crecord\u201d year but then described it as \u201cone of\u201d Scotland\u2019s strongest international trade performances of the past five years.<\/p>\n
Its \u00a350m of investment in 105 early stage companies leveraged \u00a3163m in private and other public sector support. Among highlights was backing the \u00a340m expansion of Prestwick Airport with \u00a311.6m, creating 450 jobs.<\/p>\n
However, it \u201cabandoned or waived\u201d \u00a321.2m invested in 43 companies. Among 18 failed investments of above \u00a3300,000 it listed electric vehicle charging firm Trojan Energy and photonics business M Squared Lasers. <\/p>\n
They had also been supported by the Scottish National Investment Bank which recently reported realised losses of \u00a365.1m and an unrealised loss of \u00a384.7m.<\/p>\n
SE\u2019s biggest single loss was \u00a32.95m invested in NexaBiome, a biotechnology company which was unable to raise investment required and was placed into administration. <\/p>\n
Scottish Enterprise said that during 2025\/26, it \u201cachieved or exceeded\u201d target ranges across most of its key performance measures.<\/p>\n
Adrian Gillespie, chief executive, said: \u201cScottish Enterprise has delivered another strong performance, meeting key targets by drawing on established strengths in internationalisation, innovation and investment and creating significant economic impact for Scotland. <\/p>\n
