The Amazon.com cargo plane that crashed at Miami International Airport on Sunday increased thrust just seconds before it overran the runway and careered into two vehicles, the US National Transportation Safety Board said.<\/p>\n
While the plane\u2019s brakes were applied shortly after touchdown, the throttles were subsequently increased \u201cto values consistent with go-around thrust,\u201d Chihoon Shin, the NTSB investigator-in-charge of the accident, said at a briefing late Tuesday. In aviation, a go-around is a recognised procedure to abandon a landing, regain altitude and reposition the aircraft for another landing attempt.<\/p>\n
The briefing provided some fresh details into Sunday\u2019s crash, which killed five people on the ground, after the NTSB recovered the plane\u2019s two black boxes. Those devices contain the data and cockpit audio from the flight and often provide clues for investigators after accidents.<\/p>\n
The jet\u2019s flight data show the plane\u2019s brakes were later reapplied and the throttles idled, though there\u2019s no indication that the aircraft\u2019s speed brakes or thrust reversers were deployed after touchdown, the NTSB said. Those mechanisms are designed to slow planes down immediately after they land.<\/p>\n
NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said her team will interview both pilots on Wednesday. She said investigators want to hear their accounts before releasing details of the cockpit voice recorder. The captain is 55 years old with 7 145 hours of flying experience, and the 37-year-old first officer has 2,655 hours, she said.<\/p>\n

Prime Air Flight 7598, operated by subcontractor 21 Air LLC, overran the airport\u2019s diagonal runway after arriving from Luis Mu\u00f1oz Mar\u00edn International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Boeing Co 767 continued roughly a quarter-mile beyond the paved runway surface, striking airport navigational equipment before ploughing into two vehicles.<\/p>\n
The jet struck a white Ford Econoline van after leaving the runway, leaving it torn apart. The van had been transporting a seven-person cleaning crew inside the airport perimeter. The aircraft then hit a small Toyota SUV travelling on a road just outside the airport fence. All five people killed and five others injured in the crash were in those two vehicles.<\/p>\n

Homendy said investigators spent most of Tuesday documenting the crash scene, collecting what she described as \u201cperishable evidence\u201d such as tire mark measurements. They also inspected the plane\u2019s engines and got inside the cockpit, she said. The plane\u2019s cargo was mainly contact lenses and there was nothing hazardous in the hold, she said.<\/p>\n

The flight was operated by 21 Air as a subcontractor for Amazon. The carrier also provides dedicated cargo service for DHL Express and is owned by Jim Crane, chairman of the Houston Astros, according to a 2021 filing with the Transportation Department.<\/p>\n
Amazon\u2019s in-house cargo airline has increasingly shifted toward larger aircraft capable of handling longer flights and bulk shipments, with the 767 model involved in Sunday\u2019s crash accounting for the largest portion of its fleet. Amazon Air also operates Airbus SE A330-300 freighters and smaller Boeing 737 aircraft for regional routes.<\/p>\n
The incident was the second major fatal US cargo-plane accident in less than a year, following the November 2025 crash of a United Parcel Service Inc. freighter shortly after takeoff from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. That accident killed all three crew members and 11 people on the ground.<\/p>\n
Cargo planes make up a relatively small share of commercial air traffic, though freighters are often older aircraft that previously flew in passenger service. In February 2019, a Boeing 767-300 operated by Atlas Air Inc. crashed near Houston after departing Miami, killing all three people on board.<\/p>\n
