Christine Lagarde reiterated that she\u2019ll depart as European Central Bank president in 2027, declining to say whether she\u2019ll remain until her term ends next October.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ll leave in \u201827.\u201d Lagarde told Ireland\u2019s RTE Radio on Friday. Asked whether that means in October of that year, she said, \u201cWe\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat I can tell you at this point is that whatever the time it\u2019ll be handled in the most professional way, as it should be,\u201d Lagarde said.<\/p>\n
In\u00a0July, she told reporters that \u201cyou are not going to see the back of me before 2027\u201d. Last week, she said that \u201cwhen there is something to report about me personally, you\u2019ll be the first one to know\u201d, adding that \u201cthere is nothing to report\u201d.<\/p>\n

Lagarde recently boosted expectations of an early exit from the ECB by revealing that she\u2019ll publish a memoir in January, with Bloomberg also\u00a0reporting\u00a0that the World Economic Forum, known for its annual gathering in Davos, is still courting her to take over and that she appears ready to accept the role.<\/p>\n

Lagarde\u2019s departure would open up one of the most powerful positions in global central-banking, with former monetary chiefs from the Netherlands and Spain among those competing for the job.<\/p>\n
Speaking on Friday in Dublin, Spanish Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo said it\u2019s time to start discussing the ECB\u2019s future after Lagarde.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is up to her to decide whether or not she finishes her mandate and we will be supporting her no matter what,\u201d he\u00a0told\u00a0Bloomberg Television.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn any case, these discussions need to take place or to start taking place\u201d because \u201cit is not just the presidency, there are more vacant spots available and we need to engage these discussions\u201d.<\/p>\n
