Elon Musk may be the richest man on the planet, but he and his mom aren\u2019t particular about where they sleep\u2014as long as it\u2019s convenient. <\/p>\n
The man, reportedly worth $942 billion and the richest person on the planet, recently confirmed he\u2019s living in an\u00a0Airstream trailer in Memphis\u00a0to oversee xAI\u2019s\u00a0Colossus expansion, a massive supercomputer center.<\/p>\n
It seems Musk\u2019s mom, a writer and model, also isn\u2019t picky about her digs when she visits her son.<\/p>\n
Appearing on Fox Business over the weekend, Maye said she slept in a garage when visiting Musk in Texas, where rocket company SpaceX is headquartered. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a small house and a small bed in the garage,\u201d Maye said. \u201cAnd I can sleep there, or 45 minutes to go in a suite in a hotel. No, I\u2019ll sleep in the garage.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen my mom moved from South Africa back to Canada, she slept in her garage, and when my kids were in school\u2014at university\u2014I slept on the floor, on the couch\u2014after taking the pizza boxes off, I mean.\u201d <\/p>\n
While Maye added that her career often allows her to enjoy luxury stays as well, her son\u2019s many roles mean he famously rests as close to work as he can get. Musk previously confirmed that for three years his primary residences were the factories of EV maker Tesla.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor a while there I was just sleeping under my desk, which is out in the open in the factory for an important reason,\u201d he said at the 2022 Baron Investment Conference. \u201cAnd it was damn uncomfortable sleeping on that floor. And always when I woke up, I\u2019d smell like metal dust.\u201d<\/p>\n
He explained: \u201cThe\u00a0team could see me sleeping on the floor\u00a0during shift change, I was just met with nothing. They knew I was there,\u00a0and that made a huge difference, and then\u00a0they gave it their all.\u201d <\/p>\n
Musk said at the time he had also slept on a couch in a conference room, but swapped it for under his desk. The entrepreneur returned to sleeping on a couch after purchasing the social media platform Twitter, now known as X. <\/p>\n
In an interview with the\u00a0BBC\u2019s James Clayton in 2023, Musk said he often slept in the San Francisco headquarters\u2014specifically\u00a0in a library on the building\u2019s seventh floor \u201cthat nobody goes to.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2018He doesn\u2019t listen\u2019<\/p>\n
Musk wouldn\u2019t be the world\u2019s first trillionaire\u2014or thereabouts\u2014if he had listened to all the advice he was given. <\/p>\n
Bridgewater Associates founder Ray Dalio, for example, remembers telling Musk not to sink his $180 million in proceeds from the sale of PayPal into a quest for life on Mars\u2014an idea that later became SpaceX. The company now has a market cap of more than $2 trillion.<\/p>\n
But Dalio isn\u2019t alone\u2014Musk also took little heed of his mom\u2019s advice at the time. <\/p>\n
\u201cHe said to me, \u2018Should I do electric cars, or rockets, or solar energy?’\u201d Maye told Fox. \u201cI said, \u2018You work so hard, just do one.\u2019 He doesn\u2019t listen to me. He did six companies, and they were all going to fail\u2014remember? And now I\u2019m so proud of him.\u201d<\/p>\n
