Yet the clearest signals of economic activity are often found closer to the ground, in the decisions businesses make every day.

Ask the owner of a restaurant on Vilakazi Street, a funeral parlour in Mthatha, a logistics operator in Tembisa or a professional services firm in Sandton how business is going, and you will hear about rising costs, infrastructure challenges and customers spending more cautiously.

Those owners may also be buying equipment, introducing payment technologies, expanding their premises, adding vehicles, hiring staff or finding new ways to reach customers.

Their decisions reveal what sentiment surveys cannot always capture: where businesses see demand, where they are prepared to commit resources, and how they are adapting to changing conditions.

Our financial results allow us to see these decisions at scale.

Perhaps the most important lesson is that growth often becomes visible before it appears in traditional economic indicators. We see it in trading activity, payments, cash-flow behaviour and decisions about stock, equipment and capacity. Funding often follows this activity rather than creating it.

What business activity tells us

Businesses continue to access capital despite weak growth, infrastructure constraints and changing consumer demand. The more important question is what that capital enables.

For some businesses, it supports working capital and stock levels. For others, it funds equipment, technology or additional capacity. Access to finance allows businesses to act sooner than they could if they first had to accumulate the full amount in cash.

Capital becomes stock on shelves, equipment in workshops, vehicles on the road and additional capacity to serve customers.

Its economic value lies in the productive activity it enables.

For banks, this requires a broader understanding of how businesses grow. Funding cannot be separated from the payments that reveal trading activity, the digital tools that improve financial information, or the networks and market access that help businesses scale.

Lending is therefore not always the beginning of the relationship. Transactional behaviour can make a business more visible and open the way to more appropriate finance as the enterprise develops.

Growth starts in local economies

South Africa’s economic potential will not be realised only in established commercial centres. It will also be built in local economies where people live, work, trade and spend.

The community economy comprises interconnected local ecosystems where households, stokvels, entrepreneurs, suppliers and businesses earn, save, transact, borrow and trade together.

These ecosystems include restaurants, spaza shops, funeral parlours, taverns and local logistics operators. Each community has its own industries, customers and routes to market, so it cannot be treated as one, uniform segment.

Our latest results provide insight into activity across these local economies. FNB continues to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the community economy, with community economy advances increasing 25%.

Consider the restaurant on Vilakazi Street. Expansion may mean more orders from suppliers, additional work for local service providers and another staff member on the payroll. The value created does not stop at the restaurant’s door; it moves through the local economy.

Capability determines whether growth can be sustained

Capital can create an opportunity to grow. Capability determines whether that growth can be sustained.

An early-stage entrepreneur may need help formalising the business, maintaining reliable financial records or managing cash flow. A more established SME may need access to larger supply chains, export markets, digital systems or partnerships that support growth at scale.

Access to finance without the ability to use it effectively may leave underlying constraints unresolved. Equally, a capable business without capital may be unable to act on a viable opportunity. Sustainable growth requires both.

Digital payments, accounting systems and cash-flow tools can improve operations and financial information.

Market access, mentorship and trusted networks can help entrepreneurs find customers, enter new markets and strengthen their business models.

For business owners, payments, working capital, technology, market access and practical support are all part of the same growth journey.

South Africa cannot support SMEs through fragmented interventions. Banks, policymakers and business-support organisations need to build connected pathways around how businesses start, trade and grow.

The story behind the results

Financial results look back at what has happened. The business decisions behind them can also offer a view of what may come next.

This is not a story of easy optimism. Businesses continue to face weak growth, infrastructure constraints and pressure on consumers. Nor does every loan signal expansion. Capital may protect working capital, maintain operations or respond to an immediate need.

What matters is that businesses continue to make choices about stock, equipment, technology, staffing and capacity.

Those choices put money into the real economy and create activity across employees, suppliers, customers and communities.

I am grateful to the businesses that entrust us with the responsibility of helping them run and grow. It is a responsibility we do not take for granted, and one that keeps us challenging ourselves to do better.

The results do not suggest that economic recovery is complete. They show where it is already under way, one business decision at a time.

Long before recovery appears in the headline numbers, it is often visible in the choices entrepreneurs make about their customers, their businesses and their future.

Ghana Msibi is CEO of FNB Business.

Brought to you by FNB.

Moneyweb does not endorse any product or service being advertised in sponsored articles on our platform.

                        #businesses #find #ways #grow #uncertainty

Economic growth is often discussed in terms of GDP, confidence indices and market performance.
