The changes are likely to increase demand for\u00a0\u2018humans in the lead\u2019,\u00a0even though the job specifications will be radically different.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Joshi\u00a0has data\u00a0and historical precedent to back\u00a0up\u00a0his assertion. In the 1990s, many companies, spooked by the threat of the Millennium Bug, invested heavily in technology\u00a0updates\u00a0as a protective measure.\u00a0The bug\u2014linked to the New Year\u00a0date\u00a0change from the 20th\u00a0century to the 21st\u2014never\u00a0materialized, leading to predictions that tech spending would fall back to\u00a020th\u00a0century levels. It went in the opposite direction\u00a0and the\u00a0\u2018trend to spend\u2019\u00a0continued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe demand for human labor will not go away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mohit Joshi chief executive of Tech Mahindra<\/p>\n<p>Similar momentum is\u00a0apparent\u00a0in 2026 when it comes to\u00a0the effects of\u00a0artificial intelligence\u00a0on workforces.\u00a0\u201cWe think the productivity gains will not result in immediate headcount impacts,\u201d\u00a0Joshi\u00a0says. \u201cThere is a lot of investment that will need to happen over the next couple of years to drive simplification,\u00a0modernization\u00a0and optimization. And,\u00a0especially on the data side, investment will be\u00a0required\u00a0beyond the three to five years that it will take to modernize and simplify systems.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the best case beyond that, I feel the complexity of organizations will increase dramatically. And,\u00a0if the AI premise gets realized fully,\u00a0the economic\u00a0growth is going to be so much more significant. The journalist\u00a0Ezra Klein has\u00a0written\u00a0a book of the same name,\u00a0Abundance,\u00a0arguing that governments have a key role to play in ending the age of scarcity.\u00a0Products and services will change so radically\u00a0that demand for employees will increase.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy own advice to my\u00a0teams\u00a0is that there will always be somebody who\u2019s a winner,\u201d Joshi\u00a0says. \u201cAnd my sense is that the people who are winning will have a few attributes. The first\u00a0is\u00a0that\u00a0they will be fast, because\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0a gigantic premium for speed. You need to be able to pivot very quickly.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe second is curiosity. And the final thing is, at a time of\u00a0great change, leaders will need a degree of empathy and kindness to be able to carry teams along with them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0\u2018waterfall method\u2019\u00a0of change\u00a0is well known to business leaders\u2014a sequential\u00a0plan where\u00a0projects are strictly\u00a0defined\u00a0and work\u00a0is often driven through\u00a0divisional silos with little\u00a0opportunity\u00a0for\u00a0re-assessment. Most now lean towards\u00a0the\u00a0\u2018agile method\u2019,\u00a0a more flexible approach to project management which encourages working between teams\u00a0across the business.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>How to build AI into the agile process is the key question. \u201cWhat can you do to drive productivity and efficiency in your business?\u201d Joshi\u00a0says. \u201cWhat is it that you should be doing to drive revenue in your business? Because productivity is nice, but revenue is really the most important piece.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026at a time of\u00a0great change, leaders will need a degree of empathy and kindness to be able to carry teams along with them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mohit Joshi<\/p>\n<p>Return on AI investment is the key metric boards will want to see.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s very clear that organizations are going to get a lot flatter,\u201d Joshi\u00a0says. \u201cYou will have people at the top\u00a0who\u00a0will have a lot more in terms of span of control.\u00a0You will have\u00a0maybe a\u00a0bulging middle instead of the traditional pyramid that\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0had.\u201d\u00a0Employees with five to ten years\u2019 experience will become ever more valuable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Not everything is digital. Joshi\u00a0laughs as we notice that we both\u00a0write with pens\u00a0on paper (it helps me think more clearly). He\u00a0encourages his children to read physical books, with\u00a0a small pocket-money boost for each one completed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I tell my kids,\u00a0almost obsessively, is\u00a0that\u00a0the ability to read and write well will never go away. So read as widely as you can early in life, because you will never\u00a0again\u00a0get this opportunity of unbroken periods of time where you can read, nor will your memory ever be as good to absorb as much as you can today.
