Four months is far too short a period over which to judge a long-term growth portfolio.

The more useful concern is the one you have already identified: did you choose each investment for a defined role, or because it had recently performed well?

Before changing any fund, separate the decisions into three parts:

Your immediate financial resilience
The structure of the TFSA, and
The structure and contractual terms of the RA.

Your first priority is financial resilience.

You are applying for renewal of a disability grant, so your income may be uncertain and the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) will consider the applicable income and asset means test.

Confirm directly with Sassa what must be disclosed and how your investments are treated.

Do not restructure investments merely to try to influence grant eligibility.

Accessible cash

You also need enough accessible cash for expenses that cannot safely be funded from a volatile portfolio.

This matters because your TFSA should ideally be treated as scarce long-term investment space, not as your first emergency fund. Withdrawals are allowed, but amounts withdrawn and later reinvested count as new contributions against the annual and lifetime limits.

Your RA is also not designed to serve as an ordinary emergency fund.

Although limited access may be available through the retirement-fund savings component, retirement savings remain subject to specific access rules and should generally be preserved for their intended long-term purpose.

The right growth allocation is therefore the one you can hold without being forced to sell after a market decline.

Within the TFSA, the main issue is overlap

The Satrix MSCI World holding already gives exposure to large and mid-sized companies across developed markets.

The Sygnia S&P 500 holding adds a concentrated US allocation, but much of that US exposure is already inside MSCI World. The actively managed global ETF may overlap with both. Satrix Top 40 then adds a concentrated South African large-company allocation.

This is not automatically wrong, but it becomes a problem if the overlap is accidental.

Four funds can look diversified while repeatedly owning many of the same underlying companies.

Start by deciding what proportion should form the broad global core and whether you intentionally want additional US or South African exposure.

Every holding should have a job that another holding is not already doing.

If you cannot explain that job in one sentence, the portfolio may be more complicated than it needs to be.

The RA requires a different review

Satrix Dynamic Balanced, Coronation Balanced Plus and Allan Gray Balanced are diversified multi-asset funds intended to operate within retirement-fund constraints.

Holding several balanced funds can diversify manager decision-making, but it does not necessarily create a fundamentally different asset allocation.

It can also make it harder to see your combined exposure to shares, offshore assets, bonds and cash, and harder to identify which manager is adding value after costs.

The Sanlam Cumulus Echo contract adds another layer.

Before switching funds, reducing contributions, making the plan paid-up or transferring the RA, obtain a written schedule showing the current fund value, transfer or termination value, Effective Annual Cost, advisor and platform charges, and the effect on any Echo bonus or other contractual benefit.

A seemingly better fund can be a poor switch if the cost of changing overwhelms the expected benefit.

How to review your portfolio

A disciplined review would therefore do the following:

1. Set an accessible emergency-fund target based on your actual monthly expenses and income uncertainty.
2. Confirm the Sassa means-test and disclosure position directly with Sassa.
3. Map every TFSA and RA holding to its underlying local, offshore, equity, bond and cash exposure.
4. Obtain the latest fund fact sheets, fee schedules and the Cumulus Echo values and conditions in writing.
5. Choose a target allocation that reflects the time horizon and the size of loss you could tolerate without abandoning the plan.
6. Change only what is clearly inconsistent with that target.

My inclination would be to simplify and clarify rather than chase whichever fund performed best last year.

That may lead to changes, but the reason should be excessive overlap, unsuitable risk, poor value or a contractual problem, not a four-month return.

In this case, advice before action means understanding the whole structure before replacing any part of it.

This is general information rather than a personal recommendation.

A suitable allocation requires your budget, emergency reserve, expected income, full contribution history, complete fund split and policy terms.

Sassa should confirm the grant position, and Sanlam should confirm the contractual and cost consequences of any change.

                    #TFSA #portfolio #positioned #correctly #longterm #growth

Dear reader, Thank you for your question.
