President Donald Trump, who said Friday that he was \u201cthe one that said do it,\u201d is not trying to overturn state election results \u201cin any way, shape or form\u201d on the cusp of the Nov. 3 election, Blanche told CNN\u2019s \u201cState of the Union.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wish that we didn\u2019t have to do this. We hope for a resolution that works,\u201d Blanche said.<\/p>\n

Republicans fear that a second candidate on the ballot who is named Dan Sullivan \u2014 a retired teacher and school administrator from\u00a0the tiny fishing community of Petersburg\u00a0\u2014 could siphon away votes from the senator and tip the outcome in favor of\u00a0Democrat Mary Peltola, a former congresswoman.<\/p>\n

A day after the lawsuit was filed on Thursday, Peltola called it \u201cjust flagrant, flagrant corruption in my opinion\u201d and a diversion tactic by Republicans. Alaska\u2019s other Republican senator, Lisa Murkowski, also criticized the lawsuit in a social media post.<\/p>\n

Trump told reporters on Sunday that he believed the ballot was illegal because it was unfair and that Sen. Sullivan should be identified to voters as the sitting senator.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt least let him use the name Sen. Dan Sullivan as opposed to incumbent, because a lot of people don\u2019t know what incumbent means,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

Alaskan voters will see \u201cDan S. Sullivan\u201d identified as a \u201cregistered Republican\u201d and \u201cincumbent\u201d on their ballots, while \u201cDaniel J. Sullivan Jr.\u201d will not have a party affiliation.<\/p>\n

Blanche represented Trump as a personal attorney before the Republican president appointed him to lead the Department of Justice, which filed the lawsuit in Alaska. Blanche defended Trump in his\u00a0election inference case\u00a0before voters elected Trump to a second White House term, effectively ending the criminal prosecution.<\/p>\n

Blanche told CNN host Dana Bash that it was \u201ccrazy\u201d for her to ask him if Trump was trying to lay the groundwork for the same sort of election challenges that occurred before a mob of his supporters\u00a0stormed the U.S. Capitol\u00a0on Jan. 6, 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not doing anything improper. We\u2019re not doing anything we\u2019re not allowed to do. And we have to let the process play out,\u201d Blanche said. \u201cBut I do think it\u2019s important for the American people to understand that we are not \u2014 (and) President Trump is not \u2014 trying to take over a state election in any way shape or form.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lawsuit, he told CBS\u2019 \u201cFace the Nation,\u201d is meant to \u201cput guardrails in place\u201d to preserve possible evidence of voter confusion at the polls.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not saying, \u2018Don\u2019t certify.\u2019 It\u2019s saying, \u2018If a court ultimately determines that it was decided because of confusion and not the will of the voters, then we do not think the states should certify.\u2019 And that\u2019s consistent with federal law and consistent with even Alaskan law, if that happens,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
