Ming Yang will not be investing in Scotland<\/p>\n
Chinese renewable energy company Ming Yang has been blocked from investing \u00a31.5 billion in the Highlands in what would have been the UK\u2019s largest wind turbine manufacturing plant.<\/p>\n
The UK government has decided on security grounds not to allow the facility at Ardersier Port near Nairn, which would have been a huge economic boost to the region with the promise of 1,500 jobs.<\/p>\n
The UK government said the turbines from the facility would not be suitable for UK offshore wind projects and it could not support their use.<\/p>\n
Kate Forbes, the outgoing deputy first minister, expressed frustration at the decision, saying: \u201cNational security is obviously important and must be respected, but it is regrettable the UK government has failed to explain precisely what the problem is with Ming Yang.<\/p>\n
\u201cLabour are already hammering Scotland\u2019s oil and gas sector, killing investment and costing jobs. Now, at exactly the time when we need to accelerate the transition to clean, green energy, delivering the jobs people need, Labour have pulled the rug out from under Scotland\u2019s renewables industry.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis decision has been sitting on the desks of UK government ministers for over 18 months. Their dithering will have far-reaching consequences that, once again, will be left for Scotland to deal with. That is simply sabotage of Scotland\u2019s industrial future.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kate Forbes: Labour has pulled the rug from the renewables sector <\/p>\n
A spokesperson for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero said: \u201cAfter careful consideration, government\u2019s view is that we cannot support the use of them in UK offshore wind projects.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will always act to protect our national security, and we are committed to strengthening and prioritising resilient and sustainable offshore wind supply chains.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cWe welcome investment from China where it\u2019s in our national interest \u2013 as demonstrated by significant inward investment during the prime minister\u2019s recent visit to Beijing.\u202f<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will continue to take a consistent, long term and strategic approach to our relationship with China \u2013 cooperating where we can, whilst never compromising on security and resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ming Yang said it was disappointed by the decision but would continue to \u201cengage constructively\u201d with the UK government.<\/p>\n
It said: \u201cWe will continue to engage constructively with the UK government, including on the important topic of national security, and remain committed to supporting the UK\u2019s mission to become a clean energy superpower.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe continue to believe in the long-term potential of the UK market, and our planned activities remain unchanged.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rumours that a decision was imminent had swirled around Holyrood today after Ming Yang had intimated that it could take the investment elsewhere in Europe. <\/p>\n
Independent MSP\u00a0Fergus Ewing\u00a0used the last question at the final First Minister\u2019s Questions before parliament dissolves to seek clarification.<\/p>\n
\u201cRumours now suggest that [Ed] Miliband of the UK Government is about to reject this in the grounds of national security,\u201d he said. \u201cBut industry in Scotland say a technical solution to those concerns can be met, and it should be met by an open tendering competition by the UK Government.<\/p>\n
The former\u00a0SNP\u00a0energy minister told Holyrood went on: \u201cSo will he [John Swinney], as\u00a0Alex Salmond\u00a0most certainly would, move heaven and earth to secure this, the largest ever investment in Scotland. And will he persuade the UK Government that to do anything other than to approve it would be an act of abject betrayal.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Swinney said he recognised \u201cthe seriousness and the significance of the issue\u201d and said the lack of a UK Government decision on the plant was \u201ccausing no end of frustration\u201d.<\/p>\n
