France withdrew an invitation for South Africa to attend a summit of Group of Seven leaders in June following pressure from the US, President Cyril Ramaphosa\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n
Leaders of the world\u2019s richest nations are scheduled to meet in \u00c9vian-les-Bains, in southeastern France, from June 15-17.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe invitation was withdrawn by the French government due to sustained pressure from the US,\u201d South African presidency spokesman Vincent Magwenya said by phone on Thursday. \u201cThat\u2019s the communication we received from the French government.\u201d<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for President Emmanuel Macron\u2019s office didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment. The US State Department also didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment sent via its website and by email.<\/p>\n
Earlier, an official in Macron\u2019s office said that South Africa wasn\u2019t invited to the G7 because Kenya \u2014 where Macron plans to travel in April \u2014 is attending in its stead. Other invited countries include India, South Korea and Brazil, the official said.<\/p>\n
Kenya\u2019s principal secretary for foreign affairs said on March 24 that the East African nation had been asked to attend the summit.<\/p>\n
South Africa\u2019s relations with the US have deteriorated sharply since Donald Trump\u2019s return to the White House last year. The American president has falsely accused Pretoria of subjecting White farmers to a genocide and seizing their land, denounced its relations with Iran and Hamas, and rejected its Black economic-empowerment policies.<\/p>\n
Trump boycotted a G20 summit that Ramaphosa hosted in Johannesburg in November last year, and said South African officials won\u2019t be invited to attend this year\u2019s meeting in Miami.<\/p>\n
