But in fast-moving markets, control can become a handicap.

It’s especially true in artificial intelligence, where platform purity is not the major issue. Instead, the focus is on access to the most powerful tools.

That is what makes Apple’s so groundbreaking.

What’s all the hullabaloo about? Well, Apple approved a third-party driver developed by AI startup Tiny Corp. that allows NvidiaGPUs to work with Apple Silicon Macs in external setups. On the surface, it’s not a major change for either Apple or Nvidia. It is not plug-and-play, it is not built for the broader user base, and it doesn’t suddenly transform Macs into gaming machines backed by Nvidia hardware.

For years, Apple Silicon made it impossible to use external GPUs on Macs that were based on Intel, at least in a limited way. Apple seems to be reopening that door by signing this driver, but only a little bit and very carefully. Even so, the opening is worth keeping an eye on.

Because in the AI race, Nvidia is not just another chipmaker among millions. It is the one company Apple may no longer be able to keep at arm’s length.

Apple may be making room for Nvidia on Apple Silicon

The key here is not that Apple suddenly got outside graphics hardware for everyone.

It did not, in fact, do that.

Users still need to compile the driver themselves, often with tools such as Docker, and the current setup is aimed at AI workloads rather than everyday graphics or consumer display use. The solution is essentially for advanced users and does not represent a polished feature Apple wants the broader Mac audience to accept.

Related: Veteran analyst sends shocking message on Nvidia after earnings

Still, Apple’s approval changes the dynamic.

Before this, developers experimenting with Nvidia GPUs on Apple Silicon often needed to hang their hat on unofficial workarounds that required disabling important system protections.

That made the setups harder to control and trust. Apple’s reported signing of the Tiny Corp driver eliminates one of the biggest barriers for the company.

It also sends a huge signal to the markets as well as the common investor: Apple is now willing to play ball. The tech giant is willing to allow more flexibility on its Arm-based Macs than has been the case thus far.

That matters because Apple Silicon is a runaway success. The chips are fast and efficient, and you can perform almost all everyday and professional tasks with their help. But when it comes to the most demanding AI workloads, Apple’s hardware is not the first thing you will think of. Instead, that prize goes to Nvidia’s GPUs.

The gap has created a quiet tension regarding Apple’s platform strategy.

On one hand, Apple wants developers hooked onto its devices. On the other hand, many of the developers shaping the AI economy still want Nvidia hardware as part of their arsenal, simply because the chips’ reputation precedes them.

If Apple makes that easier, even in limited form, it will make the Mac much more accessible to a growing market.

In that light, don’t dismiss this as just another driver story.

It is a sign that Apple may be adjusting to a reality that’s becoming more difficult to ignore. AI development won’t wait for every company to keep its ecosystem completely closed.

Apple quietly makes a move Nvidia bulls may welcome.

Riley/Getty Images

Nvidia’s AI dominance may be forcing Apple to bend

For Wall Street, the more interesting question is whether this will become a mainstream Mac feature going forward.

It is why Apple enabled it all.

Apple is very selective about what it allows onto the macOS, especially when it involves low-level hardware support. So when the company signs a third-party driver that works with Nvidia GPUs, it suggests a deliberate strategy.

More Nvidia:

Bank of America resets Nvidia stock forecast after meeting with CFOGoldman Sachs sends blunt message on Nvidia stock after GTCNvidia CEO makes bombshell call on AI’s next big thing

Nvidia’s grip on AI infrastructure is now too significant to disregard.

Its chips power much of the current AI boom. From model training to inference workloads, everything is thanks to Nvidia GPUs. And demand for its hardware continues to shape spending across Big Tech and startups alike.

Apple, in contrast, remains a dominant hardware company, boasting strong in-house silicon, but it has not become the center of gravity for serious AI compute.

That is not a failure on the part of Apple. It means for this phase and this segment of the AI battle, the champion is Nvidia.

Apple’s reported move looks, at minimum, like an acknowledgment of that fact.

What Apple’s Nvidia move really signalsApple reportedly approved a third-party driver for Nvidia GPUs on Apple Silicon Macs. The move eliminates the need for some risky security workarounds.Support remains technical and focused on AI workloads, but there is less of a focus on mainstream graphics.Apple is still not delivering larger plug-and-play external GPU support. The decision may reflect Nvidia’sgrowing importance in AI development.

The main point for Main Street readers is clear. Your next Mac won’t suddenly become an easy Nvidia machine.

For investors, there is a much more intriguing takeaway.

Apple may be signaling that its usual closed-door approach comes with limits in the AI era. If developers increasingly want Apple hardware but they also need Nvidia acceleration, Apple can do one of two things.

It can resist demand, or it can make room for it. The current move suggests the company is going with the second option.

That’s really the takeaway.

Apple changed just enough to suggest that even one of the most tightly controlled tech companies might be reconsidering where control ends and opportunity begins.

Related: Nvidia CEO makes bombshell call on AI’s next big thing

#Apple #unveils #shocking #Nvidia #move

Apple (AAPL) just made a shocking move.
