First Minister John Swinney will today\u00a0announce plans for a new quango among a range of other measures to help regenerate Glasgow\u2019s fading city centre.<\/p>\n
Mr Swinney says an SNP government will establish an urban\u00a0development corporation, complementing the work of the Clyde Gateway in the east end.<\/p>\n
He will offer to take on responsibility for the maintenance of the Clyde Tunnel, freeing around \u00a31\u00a0million\u00a0of cost to the local authority and meaning there is no need for\u00a0congestion\u00a0charges to fund maintenance.<\/p>\n
Mr Swinney is supporting the next stages of the\u00a0feasibility\u00a0work\u00a0on the Clyde Metro proposal.<\/p>\n
Other measures include supporting the refurbishment of the People\u2019s Palace and Winter Gardens, and ensuring they are reopened to the public.<\/p>\n
The First Minister said: \u201cGlasgow\u00a0is\u00a0one\u00a0of Scotland\u2019s greatest economic assets\u00a0\u2013 a cosmopolitan, thriving city, blessed with outstanding strengths and\u00a0huge potential.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to build on that potential\u00a0and make sure Glasgow is everything it can be. \u00a0That is why I will establish an urban regeneration company for Glasgow to\u00a0revitalise\u00a0the areas\u00a0of the city\u00a0centre\u00a0that need it and drive economic growth.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I will\u00a0take action\u00a0on a\u00a0site which holds a special place in the heart of many Glaswegians, providing support the city needs to complete the refurbishment of the People\u2019s Palace and Winter Gardens and get them reopened to the public again.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe plans I am setting out today\u00a0honour\u00a0Glasgow\u2019s past and focus on the city\u2019s future.\u00a0Because unlike\u00a0others who want to\u00a0talk\u00a0this great city down, I am clear that Glasgow\u2019s best days\u00a0are ahead of it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe SNP is always on Glasgow\u2019s side \u2013 and as First Minister I will do everything I can to make Glasgow flourish.\u201d<\/p>\n
Scottish Labour candidate for Glasgow Easterhouse and Springburn Paul Sweeney\u00a0said: \u201cIt takes a real brass neck for John Swinney to boast that he is on Glasgow\u2019s side when his party has completely failed the city over the last decade.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor years, SNP ministers have treated Glasgow as an afterthought. They decimated the council\u2019s budget by cutting over a billion pounds from it and allowed vital services such as street cleaning and roads maintenance to fall below the standards we need.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey have also dragged their feet on bringing our buses back under public control while similar big cities like Manchester forge ahead.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is only now \u2013 four weeks\u2019 out from an election \u2013 that Swinney is finally promising to act to clean up the SNP\u2019s own mess. People will not be fooled by this last-minute attempt to portray himself as someone who cares about the city.<\/p>\n
\u201cGlasgow is a world-class city, but it is being held by a dismal SNP government which has no vision and no ambition for it.<\/p>\n
\u201cScottish Labour will back local businesses and high streets by reforming business rates, fixing the roads, cleaning up our streets by delivering fair funding for Glasgow City Council, and tackling crime and antisocial behaviour by boosting community policing.\u201d<\/p>\n
