With the fluctuating price of jet fuel and the regular challenges driven by an expensive market, the future of many smaller carriers hangs in the balance as some analysts warn that we could soon see a string of airline bankruptcies if the current situation in the Middle East continues.<\/p>\n
Airlines to shut down in the last month include Air Albania and Slovenian low-cost carrier AlpAvia while Air Cal\u00e9donie serving the remote French overseas territory has also filed for bankruptcy protection over widespread unrelated protests that left it unable to run flights.<\/p>\n
Based out of Mexico City, low-cost holiday airline Magnicharters was launched in 1994 amid the growth of the travel agency Magnitur. Flying the domestic holiday market to popular Mexican resort destinations like Canc\u00fan and the Yucat\u00e1n, Magnicharters over the decades grew to a peak 27 routes and a fleet of five Boeing 737 planes.<\/p>\n
Magnicharters suspends all flights until May<\/p>\n
But now facing what founder and CEO Gabriel Boj\u00f3rquez classified as “logistical issues”, Magnicharters has shut down all operations for two weeks in a massive shutdown that affects thousands of passengers with canceled flights and prompted the Mexican government to step in with an emergency response.<\/p>\n
Without expanding on the reason for the sudden cancelations, Boj\u00f3rquez put out a social media statement saying that the airline “deeply regrets the inconvenience caused” and is “addressing this situation with due diligence to restore operations as soon as possible.”<\/p>\n

As of Apr. 13, large numbers of travelers remain stranded in airports in Cancun, Merida, and Huatulco. Amid a rapidly-evolving situation, local outlets report that Mexico’s Agencia Federal de Aviaci\u00f3n Civil [aviation regulatory agency] confirmed that it was working with other Mexican airlines such as Aerom\u00e9xico, Viva and Volaris to fill any of their available seats with stranded passengers.<\/p>\n
The Mexican government also ran one evacuation flight from Canc\u00fan given that the resort has the largest number of stranded passengers.<\/p>\n

What Magnicharters travelers with canceled flights can expect going forward<\/p>\n
On top of confirming that affected travelers can wait to be contacted with rebooking options or request a full refund through their booking, Magnicharters offered little explanation on what prompted the shutdown.<\/p>\n
As of the current moment, all flights are canceled until the start of May.<\/p>\n

While the current suspension is being presented as temporary, the possibility of a full collapse is being floated by Mexican aviation analysts.<\/p>\n
