Energy Secretary Chris Wright confirmed that the federal government is investigating the recent string of top scientists who have mysteriously gone missing or died.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Fox News Sunday, he said there\u2019s a formal probe within the Department of Energy that\u2019s part of a coordinated investigation across various branches of the government.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of the nuclear security scientists are in DOE,\u201d he added. \u201cSo yes, of course we are looking into this.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked if the inquiry has turned up anything, Wright replied, \u201cToo early to say about that. We haven\u2019t found anything alarming yet.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The disclosure of the investigation comes after President Donald Trump was asked about the scientists on Thursday. <\/p>\n

\u201cI hope it\u2019s random, but we\u2019re going to know in the next week and a half,\u201d he told reporters Thursday on the South Lawn\u00a0of the White House, noting he had just attended a\u00a0meeting on that subject.<\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully, I don\u2019t know, coincidence\u2014whatever you wanna call it\u2014but some of them were very important people, and we\u2019re going to look at it,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The trend began a few years ago, and alarm bells grew louder after\u00a0retired Air Force Maj. Gen. William McCasland went missing from his New Mexico home in February. He was previously\u00a0the commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.<\/p>\n

Others who have disappeared include aerospace engineer Monica Jacinto Reza; administrative assistant Melissa Casias, who had a security clearance at Los Alamos National Laboratory; Anthony Chavez, a retired Los Alamos worker; and Steven Garcia, a property custodian for the National Nuclear Security Administration.<\/p>\n

Los Alamos National Laboratory and the National Nuclear Security Administration are part of the Department of Energy, which is involved in the development and maintenance of the U.S. nuclear arsenal, among other things.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, MIT physicist Nuno Loureiro and Caltech astrophysicist Carl Grillmair were killed, while Novartis scientist Jason Thomas and NASA Jet Propulsion Lab engineer Frank Maiwald have been found dead.<\/p>\n

Rep. Eric Burlison, R-Mo., pointed out that several of the people left their homes without their phones.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey just literally disappeared, left all of their devices at home,\u201d he told Fox News. \u201cThis is not normal.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
