Businesses need to prepare for the unleashing of AI \u2018hackers\u2019 and large-scale cyberattacks with nation states now behind the most serious incidents, according to a top security official.<\/p>\n
Dr Richard Horne, head of the UK\u2019s\u00a0National Cyber Security Centre\u00a0(NCSC), will today warn that states, including China,\u00a0Iran\u00a0and\u00a0Russia, are responsible for the majority of significant cyber attacks targeting Britain.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the CyberUK conference in Glasgow, Dr Horne will say that as the technology landscape develops, the\u202fdefinition\u202fof cyber security is expanding with it.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He will say that AI tools have the opportunity to be a major boost for cyber-security defences if they are secured, but he will also warn that in the wrong hands they represent a major threat.<\/p>\n
The fear is that if Mythos gets into the wrong hands or goes rogue it might lead to major data breaches or debilitating cyber-attacks.<\/p>\n
Anthropic, the maker of the Claude Mythos chatbot, has revealed it to be extremely good at hacking and the company is restricting access to help governments, tech giants and banks secure their systems as the cyber-security world braces for its general release.<\/p>\n
Dr Horne says that the number of incidents dealt with by the NCSC remains \u201cfairly steady\u201d \u2013 approximately four nationally significant incidents each week \u2013 noting that most originate directly or indirectly from hostile state actors. <\/p>\n
Rapid technological advancements and escalating international tensions are fostering \u201ctumultuous uncertainty\u201d, he says, and he cautions that the UK could face cyber attacks \u201cat scale\u201d should it become embroiled in an international conflict.<\/p>\n
He calls on those working in the field to lead a \u201ccultural shift\u201d within organisations, adding that, amidst the uncertainty, it is clear what actions need to be taken to maintain collective resilience. <\/p>\n
Dr Horne says: \u201cCyber security is the responsibility of everyone, whether they sit on the board or the IT help desk\u2026 cyber security\u202fis part of\u202ftheir\u202fmission.<\/p>\n
\u201cOrganisations that do not focus on their technology base\u2026as core to their prosperity \u2026 are no longer just na\u00efve but are failing to grasp the reality of today\u2019s world.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr Horne outlines that cyberspace is part of the contested space \u201cbetween peace and war\u201d and the UK\u2019s cyber agency is seeing Russia applying lessons it has learnt on the battlefield in the illegal invasion of Ukraine and \u201cmoving them beyond the battlefield.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Conflicts around the world in the past year have shown that \u201ccyber operations are now integral to conflict\u201d and that \u201ccyber security is the home front\u201d.\u201d<\/p>\n
