Eight\u00a0spirits industry representative organisations have warned the Chancellor of the \u201cdevastating impact\u201d of tax rises on the industry.<\/p>\n
Their concern follows new data showing how revenue has fallen sharply following a 17% increase to spirits duty over the last three years.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The duty hike cost the industry \u00a394m in 2025\/26 alone and\u00a0revenue is \u00a31.1bn lower than was forecast when the new alcohol duty system was introduced in 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The drinks organisations, which includes the Scotch Whisky Association and the Wine and Spirits Trade Association, have issued a statement to Rachel Reeves condemning what they call a super tax.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is critical that HM Treasury do not\u00a0turn a blind eye to\u00a0the role the punitive and distortive duty rate has had on\u00a0spirits\u00a0revenue, in addition to job losses and investment pauses across the spirits industry,\u201d they say.<\/p>\n
\u201cSpirits duty amounts to a super tax on the\u00a0industry and\u00a0must be urgently addressed. Pubs and the wider hospitality industry cannot survive on beer alone, yet hard-pressed consumers are being forced to pay over the odds to responsibly enjoy premium spirits, which underpin the profitability of many bars,\u00a0pubs\u00a0and restaurants.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cHM Treasury promised a review of the new alcohol duty system three years after its implementation.\u00a0We welcome the launch of that\u00a0evaluation,\u00a0and our organisations are united in our call for the\u00a0review to be as comprehensive as possible, and for the Autumn Budget to take steps to support the UK\u2019s worldclass spirits industry.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
