The eThekwini Municipality has officially declared its readiness to host thousands of global delegates, exhibitors, and tourism leaders for Africa\u2019s Travel Indaba 2026. Set to take place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre from 11-14 May, the event is positioned as a critical driver for the continent\u2019s tourism economy.<\/p>\n
The trade show was officially launched on 4 May at the Nelson Mandela Cruise Terminal by a high-level delegation including Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille, MEC for Economic Development Musa Zondi, and eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba.<\/p>\n
A powerful economic lever<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s event carries the theme \u2018Unlimited Africa: Growing Africa\u2019s tourism economy\u2019. Minister De Lille highlighted that the sector\u2019s impact goes far beyond simple travel statistics, emphasising that tourism is a \u201cpowerful economic lever capable of delivering immediate, inclusive, and geographically distributed impact across the country\u201d.<\/p>\n

In a significant show of state support, the Minister announced that President Cyril Ramaphosa will officially open the trade show this year.<\/p>\n

Global interest and local growth<\/p>\n
The 2026 edition of the Indaba features a wide international footprint and a strong focus on small business development. There are more than 700 confirmed buyers already registered, and the platform has confirmed 600 exhibiting companies, including representation from all nine South African provinces.<\/p>\n

A total of 22 African countries are participating in the trade show, which includes 191 independent micro, small, and medium enterprises. Furthermore, there will be 840 hosted and non-hosted buyers from applications across 71 countries, with 3 315 confirmed meetings taking place during the event.<\/p>\n
Zondi noted that the current buyer composition already demonstrates \u201cstrong value for the province and the City\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mayor Cyril Xaba reaffirmed that Durban\u2019s infrastructure and strategic location make it the ideal host for an event of this scale.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe City\u2019s strategic location, well-developed infrastructure, and warm climate continue to position Durban as a destination of choice, whether for business or leisure,\u201d Mayor Xaba stated during the launch.<\/p>\n
The city expects a substantial economic boost from the influx of visitors, which will drive spending across the hospitality, transport, and retail sectors. The Indaba will begin with a Business Opportunity Networking Day on 11 May, followed by three days of intensive trade engagements designed to promote African destinations and forge new global business partnerships.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
