Ming Yang makes the world\u2019s biggest turbines<\/p>\n
Chinese wind turbine maker Ming Yang is in talks with the Spanish government after its Scottish plans were thwarted on security grounds. <\/p>\n
Its chief executive Horatio Evers\u00a0told Reuters\u00a0that the company was still keen to build a manufacturing plant in Europe after its proposed \u00a31.5 billion plant in the Highlands was knocked back by the UK Government.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to build and manufacture our technology here in Europe with a European workforce,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe would invest in a factory in a country, if we have the guarantee that our turbines are eligible for the market.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ming Yang\u2019s rejected facility at Ardersier would have been the world\u2019s largest wind turbine factory, creating up to 1,500 jobs.<\/p>\n
Its talks with Spain will concern those who believe the UK government was misguided in rejecting the turbines.<\/p>\n
The UK Government was concerned that its turbines would include electronics and sensors that gather data and could also be targets for cyberattacks.<\/p>\n
Energy Minister Michael Shanks said the government had a duty to put\u00a0\u201cnational security and resilience first\u201d.<\/p>\n
Mr Evers rejected the claims, saying: \u201cWe have a well-established and robust regulatory and cybersecurity framework, and we have designed our setup to be fully aligned with EU requirements.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no risk to energy systems. Ming Yang nor any other third party can remotely shut down wind farms that we deliver in the European market. Turbines cannot be used to disrupt the grid.\u201d<\/p>\n
After the proposal was turned down, Scotland\u2019s First Minister John Swinney\u00a0said it was an \u201canti-Scottish move\u201d.<\/p>\n
However, the use of Chinese renewable technology in Europe is \u200ba contentious issue. The European Commission launched a review in 2024 into Chinese manufacturers over concerns that \u200ccheaper \u2060imports threaten European competitiveness. It has yet to publish the findings.<\/p>\n
Scottish Labour\u00a0leader\u00a0Anas Sarwar\u00a0said national security needed to take precedence over inward investment and described the First Minister\u2019s comments as \u201ca pretty strange conspiracy theory.\u201d<\/p>\n
