A shortage of medical training places is pushing top students overseas. The private sector is warning that the country’s foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) response may fail unless vaccination accelerates dramatically.

Businesses are being told they are underestimating the scale of climate-related disruption. And the communications regulator Icasa [Independent Communications Authority of South Africa] has signalled that Starlink will not be cleared for entry without a change in the law. These were among the top interviews of the week on Moneyweb@Midday.

On the education front, Brad Latilla-Campbell, country manager at Crimson Education, warned that South Africa’s medical school bottleneck is now forcing exceptional students to look abroad.

He said medicine is one of the few fields where even outstanding marks do not guarantee admission, with some local programmes taking only the top 5% or 6% of applicants. That is driving growing interest in medical degrees in countries such as Cyprus and Germany.

The concern is not only that South Africa is losing students, but that it may increasingly rely on foreign institutions to train future doctors because domestic capacity is too constrained.

You can also listen to this podcast on iono.fm here.

In agriculture, Andrew Morphew, spokesperson for FMD Response SA, delivered a stark assessment of the government’s foot-and-mouth disease plan. He argued that unless South Africa floods affected areas with vaccine and inoculates cattle at scale, the virus will continue to spread.

FMD Response SA believes the current rollout is too slow and that the country needs a far more urgent, decentralised campaign, with stronger private sector involvement in vaccine procurement and delivery.

The risk is not abstract. A failed response would hit livestock farmers, communal cattle owners, beef, and dairy supply chains and consumers.

You can also listen to this podcast on iono.fm here.

The third warning came from Volker von Widdern, strategic risk director at Riskonet, who said South African businesses are still not taking climate disruption seriously enough.

He argued that scenario planning and significant weather risk assessment remain inadequate, despite the growing frequency of storms, floods, and other extreme events. Von Widdern said climate threats are no longer just environmental issues.

They affect logistics, insurance, operations, and business continuity, particularly when they collide with fragile infrastructure and weak municipal capacity.

ADVERTISEMENT:

You can also listen to this podcast on iono.fm here.

And in the technology and policy space, Mothibi Ramusi, chairperson of Icasa, said the regulator cannot clear a path for Starlink unless Parliament amends the Electronic Communications Act.

Icasa’s position is that while it supports investment, it remains bound by current ownership and empowerment requirements. That places the ball back in government’s court after Communications Minister Solly Malatsi pushed for equity equivalent investment programmes to be recognised as an alternative route.

The result is a high-stakes standoff over how South Africa modernises telecoms policy without abandoning its transformation framework.

You can also listen to this podcast on iono.fm here.

                        #Jeremys #weekly #wrap #Medical #brain #drain #FMD #Starlink #impasse

[4
4687,4283,6504,11874,2897,2277,8887,2864,2865
