But the interview also underscored the pressure on government to show tangible progress. Business does not simply need policy signals. It needs trains moving reliably, ports clearing cargo more efficiently and logistics costs coming down.

You can also listen to this podcast on iono.fm here.

A different kind of pressure is building for South African importers dependent on China. Dylan Govender, head of supply chain at Investec Business and Commercial Banking, warned that stricter compliance requirements for Chinese imports could leave local businesses scrambling to prepare in time, with a 20 September implementation deadline potentially colliding with crucial festive-season stock planning.

Govender said the issue is not whether South Africa should properly enforce product and import standards. The concern is whether businesses have been given enough time and certainty to comply without major disruption.

For retailers and importers already dealing with weak consumer demand, volatile shipping conditions and tighter margins, delayed stock or more expensive supply chains could translate directly into higher costs and lost sales in the most important trading period of the year.

You can also listen to this podcast on iono.fm here.

The economic strain was also evident in conversations around immigration and rising anti-foreigner sentiment. Sandile Swana, political commentator and principal consultant at the Centre for Strategic Leadership, warned that xenophobic mobilisation does not create jobs or improve communities.

Instead, it shuts down trading activity, intimidates workers, damages township economies, and deepens the instability already felt by vulnerable households.

Swana argued that outbreaks of anti-immigrant action are not new and are often fuelled by political mobilisation that turns public frustration into hostility towards foreign nationals.

He said South Africa’s security services could contain planned violence, but only if intelligence is acted on early and government is clear that intimidation and unlawful action will not be tolerated.

In his view, unemployment, weak local government, and failures in immigration management must be addressed directly rather than allowing migrants to become scapegoats.

You can also listen to this podcast on iono.fm here.

That warning was reinforced by Ronald Lamola, Minister of International Relations, and Cooperation, who said immigration concerns must be resolved through the law and proper state enforcement, not through vigilante groups deciding who may work, trade or access services in South Africa.

Lamola warned that xenophobic violence has consequences well beyond the immediate communities affected. It can undermine South Africa’s relationships with African partners, expose South African businesses operating elsewhere on the continent to backlash and weaken the country’s credibility as a regional economic leader.

His message was that government must enforce immigration law firmly, but citizens cannot be permitted to replace the state through threats, intimidation, or violence.

You can also listen to this podcast on iono.fm here.

                #Jeremys #weekly #wrap #rail #track #antiforeigner #tensions #boil

South Africa’s damaged freight rail system, looming disruption for businesses importing goods from China and…

[4
13369,13370,2897,1112,3227,887,2864,2865
