South Africa\u2019s largest airline, FlySafair, has announced a further reduction to its dynamic fuel surcharge, with current charges now 40% below the peak reached in late March 2026.<\/p>\n

This is the most significant reduction since the surcharge was introduced following the conflict in the Middle East, which disrupted global oil supply routes and pushed jet fuel prices sharply higher.<\/p>\n

While the South African aviation industry managed to secure sufficient jet fuel to avoid being grounded, global market pressures meant flyers had to dig deeper into their pockets to cover travel costs.<\/p>\n
FlySafair has confirmed that, in recent weeks, both the availability and cost of Jet A1 fuel have improved.<\/p>\n

Refining margins for jet fuel have also eased, helping prices to \u201cfall faster than crude oil movements alone might suggest\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re encouraged to see some relief in jet fuel prices and we\u2019re pleased to be able to pass that benefit on to our customers,\u201d Kirby Gordon, chief marketing officer at FlySafair said in a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen we introduced the surcharge, we committed to reviewing it weekly and reducing it as soon as conditions allowed. This latest adjustment reflects that commitment to transparency and fairness.\u201d<\/p>\n
The surcharge on the busy Johannesburg-Cape Town route has fallen from a peak of R832.60 on 30 March 2026 to R491.01 as of 2 June 2026.<\/p>\n

On the Cape Town-Durban route, charges have declined from R840.65 to R495.69, while the Johannesburg-Durban route has dropped from R460.00 to R271.23 over the same period.<\/p>\n

Jet fuel prices remain closely tied to global oil markets and geopolitical developments, with the low-cost airline saying it will continue to review the surcharge on a weekly basis and adjust it in line with underlying fuel costs.<\/p>\n
