American Airlines is temporarily suspending some of its routes this summer, as\u00a0steep jet fuel costs\u00a0continue to strain carriers\u2019 budgets amid the\u00a0war with Iran.<\/p>\n

In a statement, American said it had adjusted service for \u201cselect routes\u201d in August and September \u2014 and that impacted travelers would be offered alternative arrangements or refunds. The Texas-based airline cited elevated fuel costs, and maintained that these changes were in line with wider industry trends.<\/p>\n

American also said that it was not cutting any of its routes indefinitely and that it was proud to \u201coffer an industry-leading network with more flights than any other U.S. airline.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, the summer suspensions could cause more headaches for travelers\u00a0already facing\u00a0fewer flights options and higher price tags across their budgets. Airlines around the world have canceled numerous flights or similarly trimmed schedules through the coming months \u2014 and many have are also hiking fees or\u00a0cutting other perks\u00a0in efforts to save money.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s because the cost of jet fuel \u2014 which can account for about 30% of\u00a0airlines\u2019 total expenses\u00a0\u2014 has soared during the war. A barrel averaged at nearly $142 last week, according to the International Air Transport Association. That\u2019s down from\u00a0an April peak, but still far higher than the $99 jet fuel was going for per barrel before the U.S. and Israel launched the war with attacks on Iran in late February.<\/p>\n

Most traffic in the\u00a0Strait of Hormuz, a\u00a0key waterway\u00a0for the world\u2019s flow of oil, has remained at an effective halt over the last three months. Prices have cooled some recently\u00a0as markets hope\u00a0for an eventual reopening the passage, but the U.S. and Iran have yet to\u00a0actually reach a concrete agreement. And the longer traffic stays stalled, the worse the energy crisis could get.<\/p>\n

Consumers aren\u2019t only feeling the squeeze in air travel. Gasoline, food and other everyday essentials are also being hit by these supply shocks.<\/p>\n

American Airlines did not immediately respond to The Associated Press\u2019 requests for further information about which flights would be suspended in August and September. But other outlets\u00a0reported\u00a0six routes would be affected \u2014 largely from Los Angeles, among other destinations in North America.<\/p>\n
