The Central Energy Fund (CEF) has confirmed the appointment of Tshepo Mokoka as group CEO, taking over from Ishmael Poolo who spent at least five years at the helm.

The state-owned entity (SOE), responsible for ensuring the security of energy supply of South Africa and the region, announced the appointment in a statement on Friday.

It said Mokoka brings extensive executive leadership experience, sound governance expertise and a deep understanding of South Africa’s energy landscape, adding his appointment marks an important milestone as the CEF group continues to strengthen its position as a strategic SOE.

Mokoka received the backing of the group’s board, which hailed Mokoka’s appointment as a step in the right direction.

“The board has every confidence in Dr Mokoka’s ability to lead the CEF group into its next phase of growth and transformation,” CEF group chairperson Ayanda Noah said.

“His proven leadership, strategic insight and commitment to public service make him well suited to steer the organisation as we continue delivering on our mandate of ensuring security of energy supply and driving national development.”

Before this, Mokoka was the COO at the CEF then the acting CEO.

Both Mokoka and Poolo were part of a group of executives whose appointments were previously questioned. But the claims of undue processes were later dismissed after a forensic probe found the 2020 appointments were done lawfully.

“Together, we will continue building a resilient, innovative and high-performing organisation that delivers lasting value for South Africa”, added Noah.
