Aberdeen change direction with move for Robinson – Daily Business

2 min read

Target: Stephen Robinson

Stephen Robinson looks set to quit St Mirren to take over the vacant manager’s job at struggling Aberdeen.

In an unexpected twist to the Dons’ search for a new boss, both clubs have announced that official talks with the 51-year-old are underway.

Should personal terms be agreed, it will be the second time that Aberdeen chief executive Alan Burrows has appointed Robinson having brought him to Motherwell in 2017 when he was CEO at Fir Park.

The Pittodrie club had been looking further afield for a successor to Jimmy Thelin, who was sacked in January, but have changed direction in the wake of being dumped out of the Scottish Cup by Dunfermline at the weekend.

Norwegian Erik Horneland was the No. 1 target but that move hit the buffers due to personal reasons, while former New York Red Bulls coach Sandro Schwarz had also been under consideration.

It now appears as if the solution to the Aberdeen puzzle is located closer to home, with Robinson ready to swap Paisley for the Granite City.

Robinson guided St Mirren to an historic Scottish League Cup triumph earlier this season with a shock win over Celtic in December, and the teams are primed to face each other in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup in a matter of weeks.

The Northern Irishman is seen by the Dons’ hierarchy as the person who can steer them away from the lower reaches of the Premiership and bring much-needed stability back to the club.
