ConCourt rejects appeal of impeachment ruling

South Africa’s Constitutional Court denied a direct application to appeal a lower court’s ruling that interdicted a committee from holding public hearings as part of a probe into whether the president should be impeached.

The opposition African Transformation Movement had sought to overturn the Western Cape High Court’s ruling on July 24 halting a parliamentary inquiry into President Cyril Ramaphosa’s handling of a burglary at his game ranch.

The impeachment committee said in a statement that it has noted the Constitutional Court ruling.

“We will therefore move forward in line with the Western Cape High Court judgment,” Makashule Gana, the committee’s chairman, said in the statement.
