Fairtree welcomes Hannes van den Berg back after nine years

Asset manager Fairtree has appointed Hannes van den Berg, an investment industry veteran, as a portfolio manager, the firm announced on Thursday. Van den Berg, who has more than 22 years of experience in the investment industry, will start on 1 October 2026, returning to Fairtree for a second time.

Van den Berg joins from Ninety One, where he spent over nine years and most recently served as co-head of SA Equity & Multi-Asset within the asset manager’s 4Factor team, overseeing portfolios across general equity, balanced strategies and equity hedge funds.

Van den Berg previously worked at Fairtree for nine years as a portfolio manager and analyst, where he established the equities trading desk. He will take up a role as portfolio manager within the firm’s hedge fund capabilities, while also contributing to its multi-asset strategies.

Fairtree Group CEO Kobus Nel said the firm was very excited to welcome Van den Berg back, saying he and the firm “share the same values and approach to investing”.

Van den Berg will play a key role in advancing Fairtree’s long-term strategy and supporting the continued growth of its hedge fund capability and multi-asset strategies, the firm added.
