Dangote family office gears up as investment hub for his empire

2 min read

The family office of Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest person, will ramp up operations in 2027 as it prepares to become an investment hub for his companies, according to his daughter Halima Dangote, who is overseeing the process following years of planning.

“By the first quarter of next year, you will start to see the presence of the family office,” Halima said in a Bloomberg TV interview, adding that it will focus on governance, capital management and philanthropy. The goal is for the business to survive eight to 10 generations, she said in her father’s home in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub. That’s an unusually long runway by any standard.

The Dangote family office, based in Dubai, joins a small but growing list of such entities established by wealthy Nigerians to preserve their wealth and manage their investments.

Among them are the UK-based office of Theophilus Danjuma, a retired general who made his fortune in oil and shipping, and the Tengen Family Office, founded by Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede and his late business partner Herbert Wigwe, who built Access Bank into a lender operating in about 20 countries before his death in a helicopter crash in 2024 at age 57.

Aliko Dangote, 69, founded the Dangote Group 45 years ago, growing a commodities trading business into a conglomerate spanning cement, sugar, salt, fertiliser, oil and gas. The family office is aligned with the group’s Vision 2030 plan, which aims to strengthen governance and grow annual revenue fivefold to $100 billion.

The office ramp-up follows a February internal memo elevating Dangote’s middle daughter Halima and her two sisters to senior roles across the group. Mariya Dangote, the eldest, heads the food businesses’ operations and leads commercial strategy at the cement unit; Fatima Dangote, the youngest, is in charge of sales at the refinery and fertiliser businesses.

While Dangote Group’s operations are concentrated in Africa, the family office has broader ambitions. It wants to serve as a gateway connecting the continent with the Middle East, Asia and Europe, said Halima. It will also make Sharia-compliant investments and support the broader goal of industrialising Africa, she added.

Though Halima leads the family office, it remains a collective effort. “My sisters, my dad, the lawyers, all of us are involved” in shaping it, she said.
