Deputy President Mashatile recovering after minor surgery

1 min read

Deputy President Paul Mashatile is recovering after seeking medical attention and undergoing a minor surgical procedure, his office said.

Mashatile was admitted after becoming unwell at his home in Johannesburg, the Office of the Deputy Presidency said in a statement. The Sunday World newspaper reported that the deputy president had at one point been in an intensive care unit, citing a person it didn’t identify.

The deputy presidency’s office said it won’t comment on “speculative or unverified claims” out of respect for Mashatile’s right to medical privacy, according to the statement. “The deputy president is recovering well and remains in contact with his office,” it said.

Mashatile, 64, is considered among the front runners to succeed President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is expected to step down as head of the African National Congress party next year and as the nation’s leader in 2029.
