Australian gold miner Northern Star appoints Cutifani to board
1 min readAustralia’s largest gold miner, Northern Star Resources, has appointed mining industry veteran Mark Cutifani to its board, as well as a second non-executive director proposed by activist shareholder Elliott Investment Management LP.
Cutifani, a former chief executive officer of Anglo American Plc, and veteran mining engineer Peter Rozenauers will join Northern Star’s board from October 1, the company said in a statement.
The announcement came on Monday shortly after Woodside Energy Group said that Cutifani had resigned as a non-executive director effective September 13, citing personal reasons.

Elliott, a prominent activist investor, said in June that it had built a stake worth more than A$1 billion ($715 million) in Northern Star and was pushing for a strategic review, including a potential sale. The miner has cut its production guidance several times over the past year, with issues at its Kalgoorlie processing plant in Western Australia constraining production and weighing on its performance relative to peers.
Cutifani and Rozenauers were among six candidates recommended by Elliott in August as it stepped up its campaign to lift the miner’s performance. In July, Northern Star appointed Glencore Plc executive Suresh Vadnagra as its next CEO, to replace outgoing boss Stuart Tonkin on October 5.
Northern Star’s shares rose as much as 3.4% on Monday morning in Sydney.
