Dr Tlaleng Mofokeng’s EFF prescription for Joburg
2 min readDr Tlaleng Mofokeng has a storied career that spans medicine, policy and advocacy.
Over the past two decades, she has advocated for universal health access for women, people with disabilities, and LGBT+ populations, and has raised awareness on HIV/AIDS, reproductive healthcare, and youth-friendly health services.
Most recently, Mofokeng served as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to health, concluding her mandate in 2026, and was previously on the boards of local and international health organisations, including the Soul City Institute for Social Justice, the Safe Abortion Action Fund, and the Global Advisory Board for Sexual Health and Wellbeing.
She also served on South Africa’s Commission for Gender Equality. Mofokeng is now crossing over to politics as the EFF’s mayoral candidate for Johannesburg.

In July, Mofokeng was announced as the EFF’s Johannesburg mayoral candidate by party leader Julius Malema at the party’s 13th birthday celebration in Thohoyandou.
Since then, she has been on the campaign trail engaging residents in Gauteng and other parts of South Africa, informal traders, members of the taxi industry, and small business owners.
During these engagements, she has outlined her vision for Johannesburg as the would-be mayor.
This vision focuses on expanding healthcare to function on a 24-hour basis, creating permanent jobs by insourcing municipal workers (abolishing labour brokers and private middleman contractors), completely wiping out the historical utility and municipal debts built up by registered indigent households, and service delivery basics including fixing potholes, repairing leaking water pipes, upgrading reservoirs, and eliminating sewer spills.
In this episode of the Ballot Sheet, Mofokeng has reaffirmed why she is the right person to lead Johannesburg. Asked what makes her qualified for this role, Mofokeng says her career has been in shaping and negotiating policy in health, not only domestically but also globally.
This, she believes, is a key requirement for governance and politics, one which she possesses.
