Zuma remains in hospital, office says

1 min read

Former South African President Jacob Zuma remains in the hospital, according to a statement from his family foundation, contradicting an earlier news report that he’d been discharged.

The Jacob G Zuma Foundation issued the denial via text message after broadcaster eNCA reported that he was discharged on Monday night from a hospital in Pietermaritzburg in the southeast of the country.

Zuma, who leads the uMkhonto weSizwe Party, was taken to hospital by ambulance on Oct. 6 for what the party said was a routine medical check-up, local media reported.

The state of his health has raised questions about the extent to which Zuma is able to campaign in the country’s municipal elections scheduled to take place on Nov. 4.

The MKP aims to extend its inroads into the support of Zuma’s former party, the African National Congress, that it made in South Africa’s 2024 general elections. The ANC lost its parliamentary majority for the first time since the end of apartheid three decades earlier, hurt by voter anger over poor public service delivery and high unemployment.
