2 min read

Construction has officially commenced on Wilgepark, an integrated R3 billion mixed-use precinct located along the N3 and N5 transport corridors in Harrismith.

The multi-sector development is planned to integrate retail, commercial, hospitality, and residential spaces into a single destination designed to service the Free State, regional freight networks, and surrounding agricultural nodes.

The scheme is structured into five core operational precincts:

Waterfront Mall: Retail stores, restaurants, and daily consumer services.
Waterfall Precinct: Double-storey commercial showrooms designated for automotive, home interiors, and building supply operators.
The Levels Hotel: A hospitality complex offering accommodation, conferencing facilities, wellness amenities, and event spaces.
The Kraal Estate & The Kraal Apartments: Free-standing residential properties and apartment units serviced by landscaped lifestyle amenities.

Phased construction

The physical construction of Wilgepark will be executed in phases, with site handovers following Friday’s sod-turning ceremony.

Outlining the precinct design, developer Calvin and Family Group chair Calvin Mathibeli stated: “We want to create an integrated space where people can shop, work, live and access hospitality services, while opening opportunities for businesses and local communities.”

Further details regarding the construction timetable, civil works, and commercial leasing milestones are set to be released as site installations advance.

Labour requirements

According to project figures, the development is estimated to require between 1 500 and 2 000 workers during the building phase, followed by approximately 500 to 800 permanent operational jobs across property management, maintenance, security, and retail tenant services.

Maluti-a-Phofung local municipality mayor Tumelo Thebe noted that the initiative aligns with area infrastructure goals:  “The vision is to build a destination that serves the community while positioning Harrismith for greater economic activity.”

Mathibeli emphasised that realising the economic impact will depend on execution. “Beyond the infrastructure, we are encouraged by the potential for job creation, opportunities for local suppliers and the growth of businesses that can support the project.

Partnerships between investors, municipalities and communities will be important in realising these benefits,” Mathibeli added.
