2 min read

One of Africa’s largest architecture firms, Boogertman + Partners, has been appointed as lead architect for the planned expansion of Cape Winelands Airport, owned and operated by RSA Aero.

The development, valued at between R8 billion and R10 billion, is aimed at boosting regional connectivity and economic growth in the Western Cape.

The announcement, made on Friday, confirmed that the firm will work alongside Berlin-based amd.sigma to deliver the project’s architectural vision.

The multi-billion-rand development will feature a boutique terminal, new runway infrastructure, upgraded airside systems, and expanded cargo facilities across a 450-hectare precinct.

André Wright, director at Boogertman + Partners, says the airport will serve as “a new gateway to the Cape Winelands region”, adding that the design approach prioritises human-centred, environmentally responsible infrastructure.

The project is expected to create about 35 000 jobs initially, with more than 100 000 supported over its first 20 years.

RSA Aero managing director Nicholas Ferguson says Boogertman + Partners’ track record of “award-winning, contextually responsive architecture” makes it “the ideal partner” for the landmark project.
