40-year-old furniture chain files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy

3 min read

The furniture industry has been battling a slump, as sales declined by 0.82% for 2025, compared to 2024 unadjusted, which has led some businesses to file for bankruptcy protection.

Furniture and home furnishings sales continued to decline for three straight months in 2026, according to the CNBC/National Retail Federation Retail Monitor, declining 0.11% in March, 0.27% in February, and 0.31% in January, month-over-month, seasonally adjusted.

The furniture industry has cited declining sales, as a result of a multi-year housing slump, and rising product and labor costs driven by inflation and higher tariffs, for a reduction in furniture company sales and profits.

“Furniture, of course, is many times a discretionary and deferrable expense, so weakness in the overall economy or declines in consumer confidence, like we’ve seen the last few months, can impact consumers’ willingness to spend,” Mark Laferriere, an assurance partner at Smith Leonard, told Homes.com in November 2025.

“Furniture purchases are also tied to the overall housing market, which has been sluggish, but could be primed for a resurgence with higher inventory and the ongoing reductions in interest rates,” Laferriere added, as TheStreet’s Daniel Kline reported.

SuperNova Furniture files for bankruptcy

The challenging furniture market has forced SuperNova Furniture to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to reorganize its business.

The Humble, Texas-based chain of six stores filed its petition in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas on April 15, listing up to $50,000 in assets and $1 million to $10 million in liabilities, according to PacerMonitor.

The chain’s owners said three of its stores are doing well, while three have struggled, according to Furniture Today. The bankruptcy filing could allow the company the opportunity to reject more onerous leases, according to the report.

The company is continuing to operate as usual.

Lengthy list of creditors

The furniture chain’s parent SuperNova Management Inc. filed a list of creditors with its petition that includes Ashley Furniture, Avalon Furniture, Bassett Mirror Co., Classic Furniture, Crown Mark, Furniture of America Texas, HiEnd Accents, Leather Italia, Man Wah, MotoMotion, National Wholesale Furniture, Nova Furniture, Polaris Furniture, Sanitary Mattress Co., and Sleep Design, Furniture Today reported.

SuperNova Furniture, established about 40 years ago by founder Ana Abrahams, operates stores at Deerbrook Mall in Humble, Texas; Katy, Texas; Rosenberg, Texas; three stores in Houston, and a distribution center also in Houston.

The furniture chain sells bedroom, dining room, living room, kids & teens, entertainment centers, home office, home decor, and outdoor furnishings, as well as mattresses and bedding.

Stores sell top brands

Among the brands SuperNova Furniture offers are Ashley, Tempur-Pedic, Magnussen Home, Bassett, Sealy, Stearns & Foster, Natuzzi Italia, and Parker House Furniture.

While SuperNova did not indicate a reason for filing for bankruptcy, other furniture chains have noted unfortunate circumstances for submitting their petitions.

Freeway construction affects business

A prolonged freeway construction project near American Home Furniture & Mattress’  Albuquerque stores and economic pressures, such as inflation and tariffs, resulted in the chain’s parent filing for bankruptcy, according to its Chapter 11 reorganization update & customer FAQs on its website.

The 90-year-old furniture chain’s owners, AFC Acquisition Corporation, filed its petition on March 4 with plans to reorganize its business, close certain stores, and continue operating, according to Inforuptcy.

“We are not going out of business,” the company said in a message on its website. “Our Albuquerque locations remain open, and we continue to fulfill all existing and new customer orders. All gift cards and warranties remain valid.”
