Moskito will close at the end of the month
Another bar is closing in Glasgow as the hospitality sector suffers a further blow from sky-high costs and the city’s declining appeal as a night time destination.
Moskito, which has been on Bath Street for 20 years, will shut next weekend with its owners blaming “recent government changes” and a slide in footfall in the city centre.
It had closed in 2018 before reopening under new management in 2021 and rebranded “Moskito Bar & Kitchen”.
In a Facebook post it said: “After five unforgettable years, it is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Moskito Glasgow will be closing its doors.
“Over the years, we have had the privilege of creating so many special moments with you, from endless brunches and unforgettable DJ events, to hosting some of the most beautiful celebrations, functions and milestones in your lives.
“Being part of this city and part of your memories has meant more to us than words can truly express.”
It continued: “Moskito has been proud to be part of Glasgow’s hospitality scene, and it is not easy for us to say goodbye.
“With recent government changes coming into effect, alongside the continued decline in city centre footfall, we have made the difficult decision to close.
“Our final day of service will be Saturday 25 April.”
Hospitality sector leaders have warned that government imposed costs, such as high business rates, would lead to more closures and job losses.
There are also growing concerns about graffiti, litter, neglected roads and paving, as well as empty shop units adding to a feeling that Glasgow has become a shabby and unwelcoming city.
