Apple has a new boss who will take the company to his next stage

Technology giant Apple has named hardware executive John Ternus as its new chief executive to replace Tim Cook who will become executive chairman.

Mr Ternus has been at Apple for 25 years and will take over on 1 September, succeeding Mr Cook who has led Apple since 2011 following the resignation on health grounds of the legendary Steve Jobs.

Mr Cook described the job as “the greatest privilege of my life” and described his successor as having “the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator and the heart to lead with integrity and honour”.

As head of hardware engineering, Mr Ternus has overseen all of Apple’s physical products including the iPhone, the iPad and the Apple Watch. In his new role he will take up the challenge of artificial intelligence.

Ben Bajarin, chief executive of technology consulting firm ‌Creative Strategies, said Mr Ternus is well-liked within Apple “and will bring fresh energy”.
