Bad news for Muirfield as Renaissance extends deal – Daily Business

Venue: The Renaissance Club.
Muirfield’s wait to host The Open Championship is set to go on after it was confirmed that the Genesis Scottish Open is to be held at the neighbouring Renaissance Club for the next four years.
The East Lothian venue has staged the tournament since 2019 and has now agreed a deal that will stretch that sequence to 2030.
With the event traditionally staged the week before The Open, it would be a logistical nightmare to have the major events back-to-back.
Muirfield is widely recognised as one of the best links courses in the world, with The Open having been played there on 16 occasions.
However, the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers (HCEG) lost its place on any rota 10 years ago when it fell foul of the R&A after voting against women members. A major public backlash saw that controversial decision reversed and while the Women’s Open was welcomed in 2022, the wait for the men’s version goes on.
Rory Colville, Genesis Scottish Open championship director, said: “The Renaissance Club has been a fantastic host venue for the Genesis Scottish Open over the past eight years. The venue has grown and developed with the event in that time, and John and Jerry Sarvadi and their team have really been committed to providing a world-class experience for everyone on site.”
John Sarvadi, The Renaissance Club CEO, added: “We at The Renaissance Club are thrilled to extend our role as host venue for the Genesis Scottish Open, an event that has firmly established itself as one of the premier tournaments in world golf.
“We are pleased to continue our collaboration with Genesis in working with the DP World Tour, the PGA TOUR, and our other valued partners to further grow and enhance this world-class event through 2030.”
This year’s tournament will run from July 9-12, with American Chris Gotterup defending his title, with two-time Masters champions Rory McIlroy and European Ryder Cup star Robert MacIntyre among those already confirmed.
