Toyota Hilux breaks world record with massive Nampo gathering

2 min read

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has firmly re-established the local dominance of its flagship bakkie, orchestrating the largest recorded gathering of Hilux vehicles in history at the 2026 Nampo Harvest Day.

A total of 1 545 Hilux vehicles converged at the agricultural festival, breaking the previous global benchmark of 1 440 units. The achievement reclaims a world title that Toyota previously held following an earlier mass-gathering at the Atlantis Dunes in Cape Town.

The record-breaking assembly formed the centrepiece of Toyota’s inaugural dynamic Hilux Showcase at the event, drawing hundreds of brand loyalists from all corners of the country.

Leon Theron, senior vice president of sales and marketing at TSAM, highlighted the scale of the collective effort: “The record-breaking celebration was an incredibly memorable day. We set sights on making history and our Hilux community rallied behind us from across South Africa. This event wasn’t just about the record-breaking attempts, it was about honouring the enduring legacy of the Hilux and the strong community that surrounds it.”

The gathering also served as a live exhibit of the bakkie’s local history since its South African debut in 1969. Among the vehicles on display was an early 1970s model, alongside another high-mileage Hilux that has officially clocked over one million kilometres on its odometer.

Four more world records await confirmation

Toyota’s historic showing at Nampo may extend even further. The manufacturer confirmed it undertook four additional Guinness World Record attempts during the festival. Those specific results are currently undergoing formal adjudication and will be released to the public once officially confirmed.

For Toyota, the massive turnout reinforces how deeply the locally manufactured utility vehicle is woven into the fabric of the country’s driving culture.

“Our customers are our community and their participation reaffirmed that the Hilux is not only a vehicle. It is a legacy that is proudly South African – one that is truly built for generations and built into families, communities and shared moments,” Theron concluded.
