Success: Jens Berthel Askou

Motherwell’s renaissance under Jens Berthel Askou has been short-lived with the Dane quitting Fir Park to join French outfit Toulouse.

The 43-year-old earned rave reviews throughout the season as he guided the Steelmen into fourth place in the Premiership and qualification for the Conference League.

However, the hugely successful campaign proved to be his last in Lanarkshire, with the lure of the south of France and Ligue 1 too hard to resist after the clubs agreed a compensation package.

“This past year has been an amazing journey,” he said. “The buy-in and support from players, staff, board members, volunteers and supporters have been invaluable for me to lead the development of the club.

“There have been so many special moments along the way, but the way the season ended with a hard-fought win at Easter Road, leaving the club in a position of chasing European football next season, couldn’t have been written better.

“Special opportunities come rare in football. And you don’t know when they present themselves. So sometimes you have to leave great things behind to create new ones no matter how hard it is.”

Askou was a surprise choice to replace the equally unknown German Michael Wimmer after his brief spell in charge.

The likes of John McGlynn, Scott Brown and Russell Martin have all been quoted as among the favourites for the vacancy, but buoyed by the success of the left-field appointment of Askou, supporters will have to wait and see if the latest managerial search unearths another hidden gem.
