Earning foreign income? Here’s a better way to transfer your funds to SA

4 min read

Working remotely for an overseas employer or earning an income in US dollars, euros or pounds has become increasingly common for South Africans.

Yet when it comes to bringing those earnings home, many people continue to rely on traditional banking channels, often paying far more than they realise while navigating unnecessary administration and lengthy processing times.

Someone transferring the equivalent of R200 000 each month could be sacrificing between R4 000 and R6 000 on every payment to the banks’ hidden fees. Over the course of a year, that’s between R48 000 and R72 000 – before considering the investment returns that money could otherwise have earned.

Recognising these challenges, SA’s largest independent foreign exchange intermediary, Future Forex, has simplified the entire process of receiving foreign income.

By combining purpose-built technology with white-glove support, the multi-award-winning fintech delivers a faster, more transparent and significantly more cost-effective alternative to traditional banks – while removing much of the administration that typically slows international payments.

“It’s difficult to justify high costs and slow processing times in an age where international payments are largely processed electronically,” says Harry Scherzer, CEO of Future Forex and a qualified actuary.

“Clients deserve complete transparency over what they’re paying, quicker access to their funds and the reassurance of having an expert guide them through the process.”

The cost you don’t see

When it comes to working out the cost of transacting internationally, most people focus on the obvious charges. These may include a SWIFT fee of between R500 and R1 000, administration costs and commissions.

The largest expense, however, is often buried in the exchange rate itself.

For example, if the mid-market exchange rate is around R16.50 to the dollar but a bank offers a rate of R16.17, the difference represents a hidden margin of approximately 2%. On monthly salary transfers, that seemingly small gap can translate into thousands of rands.

That’s why transparency is central to Future Forex’s approach.

Before committing to a transfer, clients receive a quote showing the applicable exchange rate, all associated costs and exactly how much money will arrive in their South African bank account.

More than an exchange-rate problem

Price is only one part of the challenge when receiving money from abroad.

Every cross-border payment must also comply with South Africa’s complex exchange control framework, which can involve tax reporting, supporting documentation and regulatory requirements depending on the nature of the funds.

Yet many customers are left to navigate these requirements with little to no guidance from their bank.

This can be particularly frustrating for consultants, freelancers and remote employees whose payments vary from month to month, originate from multiple overseas clients or require additional documentation to verify the source of funds.

Without specialist support, understanding which documents are required, how a payment should be classified or why a transfer has been delayed can quickly become an administrative burden.

Future Forex removes much of that complexity. Every client is supported by a dedicated account manager who oversees the transfer from the initial quote through to the funds arriving in their South African bank account.

Where required, the team also provides complimentary assistance with South African Reserve Bank (Sarb) exchange control requirements, South African Revenue Service (Sars) reporting and the supporting documentation needed to keep payments moving seamlessly.
