Shoprite’s Sixty60 online sales soar over 33%
2 min readSales on the Shoprite group’s on-demand platform Sixty60 soared 33.4% in the four months to the end of October, the Cape Town-headquartered retail giant said in a voluntary operational update on Friday.
Sixty60 initially launched in late 2019 (just before the Covid pandemic hit) as an online sales platform via a mobile app for its upper market Checkers stores. But last year, the group started rolling out the service in some of its Shoprite stores, which presents further growth for the group.

The group’s Sixty60 sales reached R25.5 billion in its full-year to the end of June 2026. This means that if it continues to grow at current double-digit levels, Sixty60 sales will top the R30 billion mark during the current financial year (FY2027).
Shoprite’s core South African supermarket business increased sales 7.1% in the four-month period, with the group saying internal selling price inflation “remained in line with the 0.6% previously reported for July 2026”.

This inflation measure came in at 0.7%, with price deflation in the Shoprite and Usave chains, meaning that growth was driven by increased volumes not increased prices, it notes.
The company’s voluntary update also revealed intensifying competition in the pharmacy space and overall 6.4% growth in the group, despite the closure of 51 OK franchise stores leading to decreased sales.

Otto1890 analyst Alec Abraham described the growth in the SA supermarket business, which includes the Shoprite, Usave, Checkers, Checkers Hyper and LiquorShop brands, as “strong despite the low 0.7% basket selling price move”.

Abraham said Shoprite’s topline growth of 6.4% was slightly below consensus expectations on financial data platform Factset.
This was, in part, due to a 1.5% decline in sales for the period following a mutual termination of a franchise agreement that had already been disclosed, which led to 51 OK franchise stores being closed. The OK Franchise division now has 578 stores, and the group said trading profit growth is positive.
The group’s shares weakened just over 3% by midday on Friday, following the release of the update.
