2 min read

Online travel giant Booking.com has begun notifying several customers, including users in South Africa, that their private data may have been exposed following a security breach.

The company informed affected guests on Monday that unauthorised third parties accessed specific booking information associated with their reservations.

Scope of the data exposure

According to the notification sent to users, the breach was identified after Booking.com noticed “suspicious activity” affecting a select number of reservations.

While the total number of impacted South African users has not been disclosed, the company confirmed that the exfiltrated data potentially includes:

Personal identifiers: Names, email addresses, physical addresses, and phone numbers.
Reservation data: Specific booking details and any additional information shared directly with accommodation properties.

The company stated it took immediate action to contain the issue upon discovery and has since changed reservation pins for affected accounts to prevent further unauthorised access to bookings.

Booking.com declined to provide specific details regarding the total scale of the breach or whether it had formally notified South Africa’s Information Regulator, which currently processes roughly 284 breach notifications monthly.

The travel platform has advised its customers to remain vigilant against phishing and spearphishing attempts. Users are encouraged to verify all payment requests and double-check property policies, as genuine payments are typically processed directly through the Booking.com app or website rather than via external links or third-party messaging services.
