Gill Baird: defining year
Cosmedicare has returned to profit following a major business turnaround, with turnover rising by more than 27% as demand for private healthcare continues to grow.
Turnover increased from £4.46 million to £5.69m, while the business moved from a post-tax loss of £257,000 to an EBITDA of £1.2m in the year to the end of March 2026.
The performance marks a significant recovery for the business, which operates St Ellen’s Hospital in Livingston and St Ellen’s in Glasgow.
The previous financial year was impacted by significant disruption in the private healthcare market, particularly a sharp decline in bariatric surgery demand as the rise of weight-loss medications rapidly changed patient behaviour.
Cosmedicare refocused its clinical offering, strengthened operational efficiencies and concentrated on higher-margin specialist procedures.
The turnaround has also been supported by continued growth in demand for private healthcare, as increasing numbers of patients seek faster access to treatment amid sustained NHS waiting list pressures.
Cosmedicare has also taken a significant strategic step in securing its long-term future, with the business set to complete the purchase of its Livingston hospital site in July after exercising its right to buy the property.
Separately, the company recently secured planning approval for a multi-million expansion of the Livingston hospital, creating additional clinical capacity to support future growth.
Gill Baird, founder and managing director of Cosmedicare, said: “This has been a defining year for the business. We recognised early that the market was changing and took decisive action to adapt, refocusing our offering, improving efficiencies and ensuring we remained aligned with patient demand.
“Returning to profitability at this level is a significant achievement for the team and gives us real confidence in the strength of the business model. At the same time, demand for private healthcare continues to grow as patients increasingly look for faster access to treatment and specialist care.
“Completing the purchase of our Livingston site is another major milestone. Owning the hospital gives us greater control over our future, underlines our long-term commitment to Scotland’s private healthcare sector and creates a strong platform for sustainable growth.”
